Just built a 9mm AR. I have a 16inch standard upper (in 9mm), a spikes lower with a STANDARD (.223) parts kit.
I added a magwell/block and am running a magpul MOE stock with a 9mm buffer.

Do I NEED a 9mm hammer or will the regular one work?
* note, I have the rounded style hammer example below:

If it ramped the 5.56 hammer should work fine.

:iagree:

My bolt is not ramped and I have a standard hammer in mine. It runs like a champ with the mag well adjusted properly and quality mags.

new question, can anyone elaborate on bolt travel? I have heard the bolt travels farther back and some people place quarters? in the buffer tube to decrease travel?? what is that about?

That sounds like a bad idea and the wrong buffer or spring installed. I don't put any foreign objects in my weapons that are not supposed to be there.

Some people say that the bolt overtravels in a 9mm so they put about a 1 1/4" worth of spacer of whatever sort in to control it. Some people just use a 9mm buffer and a factory spring and say it isnt an issue. Personally I have set up one with an extra power spring and a heavy buffer and about .8" of spacer and came out well. Your setup might vary.
I see it is a .223 lower. Why don't you call spikes and see what they recommend?

Thank you!
The magwell is from promag, hope it works well... only $45.00 worries me. All the others are >100
