30-06 vs. 308

I have done something I can't explain. A couple of months ago I bought several boxes of 30-06 and I think these two boxes were mixed up with with these on the shelf. While preparing to go out for a little fun tomorrow I discovered that I have purchased some 308 ammo. I have no idea why or when I did this, but here's the question. I have a 1903 Springfield manufactured by Remington back during WWII and since I have the ammo I'm curious if I can shoot the 308 ammo in this rifle? It's the same caliber and all just shorter, but I'm thinking that this won't work. If that's the case, does anyone want 40 rounds of 150gr Winchester 308?

Just as a point of interest, at least one company makes an adapter for this:
http://www.mcace.com/adapters.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The adapter fits inside the chamber and is to be held in place with Loctite.
I have never used one, nor would I trust one in one of my guns.
But they do exist.

Which brings up the question of, "why"?

There are always people who try to "beat the system" by trying to "save money" with some bizarre device or scheme. As soon as one of these devices causes a cartridge to explode in the face of a consumer, the company will declare bankruptcy and disappear.
