Being a new resident to the state of Texas, I had a quick question. I currently have a state of Georgia CCW (obtained while stationed at Ft. Stewart) but have become a resident of Texas (drivers license and vehicle plates w/ 6 months of residence). The question I have is: does Texas require residents to have a Texas chl or can you continue to carry on an other state's license once you become a resident. I fully intend to acquire a Texas CHL but just curious if I can continue to carry in the mean time.

I believe you can continue to carry on your Georgia license, but I would advise getting the Texas CHL as soon as you could. Other forum members, correct me if I am mistaken.

It would be a good idea to get your license, but it's legal for you to carry on your GA license while you're in the process.

I don't know what GA's laws are on reporting an address change, but TX requires you to report an address change with 30 days or your license can be suspended.
If your GA license is suspended, you won't be legal to carry here. Carry here in Texas is based on Texas law, so you'll need to make sure you're famiar with those (best way is to get in a CHL class). And Texas doesn't have open carry... It looks like GA does. But your GA license only allows Concealed carry here.

I understand where yall are coming from. I have taken the CHL class and in the process of acquiring my Texas CHL. Fully versed in Texas law in regards to concealed carry I know the difference in Georgia and Texas law. The Georgia license is good for 5 years after issuance no matter where you live/move too. They do not require you to report a change of address. Ill have to find the actual Georgia code that states this but I remember it from georgiapacking.org as well as from reading their laws when I first got the license. On the flip side Georgia requires a resident (established with issuance of a state drivers license) to have their license to carry hence sparking my curiosity with Texas in this regard.

Texas law also requires you to give your CHL with your DL when asked for ID by a LEO. The penalty has been removed for failure to present it, but it's not the best way to start your interaction with an officer to tick him off when he finds out you have a CHL, are carrying, and failed to let him know.
