This post is for anyone who let their license expire, (longer than one year), and want to renew it.

First, the law:

RULE §6.21 Renewal of License

(a) Grace period. A license holder whose license has expired may submit an application to renew the license up to one year after the expiration of the license. After one year, the license holder will be required to reapply as a new applicant.

(b) Notice of renewal. Notice of renewal will not be sent to a license holder more than six months prior to the expiration of the license.

Don't order a packet online. Your CHL instructor will have all the paperwork you need. Mark through any license number on any form the instructor gives you and write your expired CHL License number above it.

Most important: On the bottom right-hand side of the TR-100 form that you receive after the profiiciency exam, check the box next to "NEW LICENSE" instead of "RENEWAL". DPS wants to make sure you took the full 10-12 hour course and proficiency exam, and not just the 5-6 hour renewal course.
