Florida permit

I'm currently in Louisiana, planning to move to Texas in two years, and just mailed my packet off last week for a Florida non-resident CHL. Best deal for the bucks with reciprocity and a five-year ticket. Will keep you posted on when the plastic comes in.

Welcome packina40. You may have found UTAH as a better deal. $59.00 the first year and then $10.00 every five years. I am not for sure about Florida. Keep us informed.

Yeah, that's a good price too. The FL permit is $117 for five years, and seems to have about the widest acceptance around the country.
In week 4 right now since mailing the application package. Their website states "up to 90 days", our CHL class instructor said they're typically five-eight weeks on the turnaround, so will hopefully get the plastic soon.

I could have bypassed the class since I meet the "small arms instruction" requirement via my military service. Florida does require a class and proficiency testing for those without prior instruction.
However, the local class provided everything including passport photos, fingerprints by a LE agency, notary service, etc as part of their "package", so it was worth it. Spent an enjoyable afternoon at the local range and left with a ready-to-mail Florida application package.

I've had a Florida permit since 2001 and just renewed. It used to give you more states that Texas, but if you check at:
http://www.handgunlaw.us
or at:
http://www.packing.org
You'll see that you now get the same states with both.
Also, I'd check with Texas DPS to see if you can carry in Texas with it once you have a Texas address. My local PD is convinced you can't.

Your local PD is wrong.
Soon Colorado will no longer honor non-resident permits, so if you go to Colorado a lot you are better off with a Texas permit.

expect it to be around the 90 day mark.
