Is there such a thing? I'm thinking specifically of something like a couch that has a steel plate (or possibly material similar to a backstop at a range) built into the back. It seems like someone could make something like this without dramatically changing the dimensions compared to a standard couch, and you could still put standard fabric, etc over the top.

It sure would come in handy in the event of a home invasion while you are sitting on the couch watching TV (assuming you orient the back of your couch facing the front door).

Anyway, just curious whether anyone has seen something along these lines.

I have never seen that but I have an AK in almost every room and I have most hidden in and under furniture. Never thought about any shielding.

Book shelves with lots of books in them. Paper in multiple sheets like in books does a pretty good job of stopping bullets.

The trick is setting up the books shelves correctly.

I like this idea alot.

I actually have a couple book shelves that are just about the same height as the back of my couch. I never thought about using those but they might be the perfect option. Done right, it should be easy to make them look natural / fashionable.

I have a friend who has a (somewhat) safe room that is behind shelves filled with books.

I personally use this, and have had no troubles so far. The best defense is truly a good offense.

Even if you did have a self-defense couch with bulletproof back, keep in mind
that in a self-defense situation you have to be on the move, getting off the dime.
Sitting on the couch doesn't seem like a viable action plan.

If the front door is being breeched, you may wish to run from the living room, hole up
in your bedroom, and wait for the BG's to come down the fatal funnel of your hallway
where you are waiting with <input your favorite firearms here>.

fatal funnel... I would assume most Gangsta's don't do much training in CQB tactics or spend much time studying OPFOR and how to counter a solid defense... Just sayin'
