Check this out. I'm sure you've heard of "Bump Keys" (or 999 keys), here's a video that explains how easy they are to make, and how easy they can be used.

Privacy locks are good deterrents in these type of situations. Deadbolts that only open from the inside so there is no keyhole to access from the outside. It's not perfect, but can buy time.

If you can afford them, Medeco locks are far better than the standard locks out there.

+1 on the Medeco locks. At least, I trust the research I did before I put their Maxum deadbolts on the house. Do I know if they were the right choice? Nope. But as long as I'm not proven wrong by first-hand experience, I'm happy. ;-) And, yeah, they're kinda pricey as door locks go, but when you figure the average house has only two or three exterior doors, spending around $150 per lock rather than $40 per lock is, I think, well worth the difference.

I haven't seen much about lock bumping in the U.S. I think it's been around in Europe for several years.
