AMD-65

Does anyone have any experience with these? I've just about decided to pick one up for fun and to satisfy this irrational urge I have to own some sort of AK variant.

I have one.
There are a couple variants out there, in addition to kit builds. Mine was imported by TGI and build on a Hungarian receiver.
Pros: Lightweight, reliable, and pretty cheap right now. The wire stock is surprisingly comfortable to shoot with. You get a lot of AK for the money.
Cons: that front hand guard gets hot quick, and the front grip makes magazine changes more difficult. Not impossible by any means, but they were designed to run with the 20 round magazines. 30s are doable, but a little harder. As well, unless you get the cheek riser from amd tech, you have zero cheek weld with the wire stock. And the sight radius is VERY short, shorter than most AKs even.
Eventually I plan on replacing the front handguard with a MI piece and throwing a red dot on top. That will negate both the handguard/short sight radius issues the gun has. I don't mind the lack of cheek weld and can still shoot the gun pretty well, but the combination of no cheek weld/short sight radius does make the gun harder than other variants to shoot accurately.
I love mine and would recommend it to anyone, as long as they're aware of those issues.

Also, where are you located? If you're close to central texas, you're welcome to shoot mine sometime if you'd like to try before you buy.
Oh and it's never irrational to want an AK.

I'm down SW of Houston, so I might be a little far to try. Besides, at the prices they are right now, I think I'll like it anyways. :) The ones I am looking at are TGI builds on FEG receivers.
I've heard about the hot handguard and the lack of cheekweld. I plan on getting the AMDTech cheek riser, and then I'm going to swap out the piston, the pistol grip, and the the front handguard for 922r compliance so that I can use foreign mags. I'll probably go with the UTG quad rail. All the reviews I've seen on it are pretty solid, and it will let me put on a VFG and an optic at some point.
I'm kind of excited about getting an AK. I've never had one before. Are there any tips you can give me about it? Any particular mags you recommend?

Sounds like you've already been doing your research!
Didn't want to warn you away from the AMD by any means, just give you a few heads up that are going to be "different" coming from ARs. Like I said, love mine.
Magazines: Any surplus steel magazines work great. Just check around at AIM, 44mag, etc and find whoever has the best deal going right now. If you like polymer magazines, the Bulgarian Circle 10s get really great reviews. I don't own any myself, but I've heard nothing but good things. In general, stay away from US magazines like Promag. They're pretty junky.
No other tips that I can think of. If you shoot surplus ammo thats corrosive, make sure to clean it really well. Beyond that just shoot the heck out of it and enjoy!

Huh... And here I thought AMD just made CPUs and GPUs. When did they start making guns?

I've heard the Thermold mags that CDNN has aren't bad for AK's, and they run some good specials. Like I said, I'll be swapping parts for 992r so I can use foreign mags anyways, so it really isn't a big deal. Plus, I may stick with 20 rounders just for the maneuverability. I'm pretty excited about it. MY AR is almost done, and now I'm going to add the AK to the mix. I don't expect teh same things from the AR as I do the AK. The AK is kind of a fun gun for now that will hopefully become a serious HD weapon. The AR is being beuilt specifically for HD/SD situations.

My one warning about using an AMD for home defense: That muzzle brake is
LOUD. Its the loudest AK I have. I won't shoot it at indoor ranges anymore, out of respect for the people forced to share the range with me.
That being said, I could see the merits of it as a HD gun. You have a built in flash bang, which could be useful.

It would never be the primary house gun, but I'd like to have enough confidence in it to make it the backup.
It is probably going to be a month before I order (waiting on a guy to buy my shotgun). Should I worry about them running out? The AMD doesn't exactly seem to be popular compared to otehr AK's, but I don't want to miss out.

I don't honestly know. As we get closer to November, EVERYTHING AR and AK related is going to go up.
At this point I have some pistol purchases I have to make, so I have delayed assembling my AR until next year. Prices are already climbing, availability is low....by the time I can make another purchase, it will be October/November and I expect prices to be completely unreasonable.
Meh. Good thing I've got some AKs to tide me over until I can build an AR I guess.

Depending upon what you are looking for and what you are wanting to put in your AR, Palmetto State armory still has a lot of stuff, and their prices are reasonable, although their shipping is a little slow. The only thing I have left to acquire is a BCG, and I'll probably go to BCM for mine.

The only thing I currently have is a stripped lower, so I'd like to just order a full build kit and save myself some shipping money instead of getting bits and pieces from all over.
But I'm about to make several other purchases that are going to suck up the gun budget for this year completely, so it'll be 2013 before it happens.
That's okay because I keep bouncing around between a 20" A2 build, an M4gery, or a mid length. Now I've got plenty of time to decide which one will be my first.

I ended up doing a midlength 16" PSA for mine. I got one of their FN-barrelled uppers on sale, so I've been piecing together the rest. It has bee a lot of fun, and I'm sure it won't be the last one I build.

For anyone reading this wondering what the heck an AMD-65 is, its an AK-47 variant produced by the Hungarians.
Here's mine in its stock form:

I have an AMD 65 Kit and the only reason I have it was it cheap - about 65 bucks shipped, in 2003.
