Any recommendations for disposal of a 9mm round that has a hairlline split on the brass? S&B factory hollow point. I can post pictures tonight if anyone is interested. I'm not planning to shoot it, but I also don't want to throw a live round away in the trash. I was thinking about pulling the bullet and dumping the powder. Any advice from experienced reloaders or others in the know on stuff like this is appreciated.

As a reloader, I simply pull the bullet, spill the powder, and crush the case, and toss it into my "recycle" can...next time I go to the scrap yard, I get a couple of bucks for stuff I'd have thrown in the trash.

There's really no serious harm in just tossing it. If the case is split to where you can pull the bullet, I'd do so, and pour the little bit of powder in the yard (it's good fertilizer).

Because of the nitrates or what? The things I learn on this forum are awesome. My wife is going to think I'm crazy if I tell her I want to scatter some gunpowder on the yard.

As I understand, it's the nitrates.

I've never tried it personally. My spilled/wasted gunpowder (and that which is colleceted from brass at indoor ranges, etc.) gets swept into small piles, transported outside, and set afire (safely). My kids always enjoy the show!

Just don't use it on your jalapeños.

Seriously, if you have a dog or other pet I wouldn't spread it around the yard. If they were to eat some it wouldn't be good.

As far as cracked brass, remove or fire the primer before discarding.

Nitroglycerin is very toxic. Other ingredients of smokeless powder such as dinitrotoluene, diphenylamine, methyl and ethyl centralite are toxic as well.

The Nitro is a good point--I wasn't thinking of the animals getting into it, but it could be dangerous in that context.

Nitroglycerine in gunpowder/TNT is the same nitroglycerine given to heart patients to rapidly dialate the blood vessels. It can cause a rapid drop in blood pressure (and according to my late father, make you feel like the top of your head is coming off!)...so it is potentially dangerous.
