Finely ordered my sons first rifle. Should be able to pick it up in about a week. Can't wait to take him to pick it up. Then take him to shot it. He has no idea it's on the way. Its a rossi single shot 22/410 combo.
Now if he would hurry up and get taller so he can shoot at the range with me so we don't have to go to friends house to shoot.

5yrs. took him out about 6mts ago and let him shoot my 10/22 and he did ok other then the size issues wouldn't let him sholder it. He also shot my AR with the butt stock collapsed and did very well. Just been trying to get him to understand how to use sights has been the biggest issue.

Draw pictures of how to line up the sights on paper for him. I had to do that with my daughter.

My sons' first rifle was a Rossi combo .22/20 gauge.

I noticed in the first 2-3 shots that the 20 gauge was too much for them. They didn't want to shoot it cause it hurt, and I didn't want them developing a flinch. I sold it at the next gun show and got an H&R .22/.410 instead. The .410 was fine.

I really like a single shot break action rifle for young children. It is easy for me to know at the glance that the action is open, the firearm is unloaded, and they are acting safely. With a 10/22, it is harder to know at a glance.

Anyway, my sons shot that until they outgrew it. I then sold it at a gun show. IIRC correctly, I sold it for about $10 less than I paid for it, so it was an inexpensive way to introduce them to shooting.

Several people have recommended me to get this one for him first. I know he will do fine with the 22. I am going to shot the 410 first before I let him, then I know at least how it will recoil. Never shot a 410, but have been told there is not much to it and its a great starter for a shot gun.

Or do cutouts with paper. There was a post on here recently where someone went to Front Sight training and one of the pictures he posted showed an instructor doing just that. I thought it was a great idea.

Paper cutouts are what we use for 4H - for durability we laminated them after cutting them out of cardstock so we can use them over and over - we did a set for all the different types (peep and post, post and groove etc.) as there are many different types our kiddos deal with. This is a hands on way to teach sight picture, and we use little orange or yellow dot stickers to show the one with dots. Have fun with your son, remember the 4 rules :thumbs2:

He shot the AR a few more times after this, did awesome. I figured the recoil was going to hurt him.

Good choice for a first long gun. Nice pics of shooting the AR and 10/22. Be sure to post shooting the Rossi.

Picked up a bb rifle for my son to shot at the house for sight training, also found some small clay disks about 2inch's around, for the back yard. Spent about an hour with him outside on sunday and seems to be gettign a little better. If I keep this up, he will probably shoot better then me.
