I am in Idaho visiting family and need to get some target practice in. There are no shooting ranges here. Everybody just goes out to the Lava fields and shoots. This seems so crazy to me! Just had to share.

Lava fields? There are volcanoes in Idaho?

Are your relatives lava lamp farmers?

1000 - 15000 yrs ago is when most of these lava formations were formed. There are a lot of Lava fields out here. If you ever get up north visit Crater of the Moons.

I looked at some pics of the lava fields. It seems like bullets would bounce off the lava rock and fly all over the place.

Ya it is kinda crazy to me. Really don't feel safe doing it. May have to drive 50 miles to the closest "range" I am saying "range" because I have only heard it is a range and not seen it yet. So far everybody that has directed me to a range ends up just being lava fields.

I now live up in North Idaho, nothing but mountains and trees up here. A lot of people go out to the National Forest to shoot all the time. The only time I use the local indoor range is when I can't get out in the woods in the winter because of the snow. Other wise there are some nice spots to shoot out in the woods. All of them have a mountain as a backstop. I prefer that because it doesn't cost anything, I can shoot rifles, I can practice shooting while moving (getting off the X), and I can practice drawing from the holster and I don't have that rule of no more than one shot per second.
When I was living in East Texas we always went out to the woods and National Forest to shoot to. Where I was living there weren't any ranges that were close by. I grew up shooting in the woods so I have a hard time going to ranges. I just don't believe in paying to shoot.

I'm the same way, grew up in NW where there was lots of government land.
Here in Texas there is almost NO public land. Crockett National Forest and LBJ Grasslands is about it AFAIK, and the latter has had some restrictions on it recently.

Not public land, but I grew up able to go shoot on family land out in the panhandle.

Now that I'm in Central Texas and living in town, I have to use ranges...its not as fun.

I know people are allowed to shoot and hunt in National Forests in other states.

What about National Forests in Texas, like Sam Houston National Forest, Davy Crockett National Forest, Angelina National Forest, or Sabine National Forest? Is the public allowed to hunt and shoot there?

I used to hunt in the Davey Crockett NF. There is a small spot of National Forest land on the northern edge of Sam Rayburn that I used to go shooting at. I only saw a Game Warden at the place in Sam Rayburn once and he said what we were doing was as he put it perfectly legal. I only saw a Game Warden out in the Davey Crockett one time and that was the year they started the antler restrictions.
