Hello all!

Been lurking for a while and thought I'd say hello!

I recently moved here from overseas on an l1 visa with work, and shot regularly back in my home country, so Texas is like heaven to me! I've been to ranges here a few time, and eventually plan on getting my chl once I feel comfortable enough with handguns (banned in my home nation)

Now my next question is mainly for other expats, although us nationals please I'd welcome your views! Anyway I was at a range local to me, and got chatting to a couple of guys there, they mentioned they both had chl's and as the conversation went on I mentioned I was thinking of getting one (now the next bit please do not think I'm am generalizing/stereotyping, I've found texans and particularly the shooting community to be the most welcoming and helpful people I have ever met) any way the atmosphere quickly changed, including being told in no uncertain terms by one of the gentleman that 'he doesn't think outsiders should be allowed to carry' ...... So my question is, im curious to know have any of the other expats on here ever found similar attitudes toward them carrying or (and as I mentioned above I'm absolutely sure this will be the case) am I a isolated case!

Folks who talk as if there should be some kind of qualifications for owning and carrying a firearm are lacking in their knowledge of our 2nd amendment and deserve our sympathies.( ) It is wrong to require a license to carry but since the law of the land forces this travesty on us, I am forced to accept it.

Welcome! You'll find there is absolute wealth of knowledge from the folks on this forum, it's really a great place. Congrats on taking the step to getting more comfortable with pistols!

Don't let the impression that those guys gave you hold you back. Unfortunately, there are still plenty of bigots in our country, and the gun community has it's share of those types too. Don't let that fool you though - the welcoming and supportive types outnumber the less than friendly fellows by far, and the friendlies are what grow the sport. Stay safe and happy learning!

I have zero problem with legal immigrants/people here working legally owning and carrying guns.

In fact, if you really like it around Texas you're welcome to stay as long as you vote to make sure we keep those rights.

Count me in on that. As long as everything is being done "the right way" and following the law, I don't see why it should be a problem. Welcome to Texas, enjoy!

What are the citizenship requirements for a CHL?

Examining the eligibility requirements, it would seem that the person would need to be "a legal resident of this state", or "a legal resident of another state" for a non-resident license. A person in this country on a visa is obviously here legally, but is he considered a "resident"?

Also, the person must be "fully qualified under applicable federal and state law to purchase a handgun" -- what are those requirements with respect to citizenship?

For a Texas CHL, citizenship is not required. However, I have notice that some states (Arizona) require you to be a US Citizen for a non-resident permit.

You bring up a good point OP. I don't know that our bill of rights should apply to citizens of other countries just because they are visiting the US. I also believe all men have a right to defend themselves and their loved ones. It's a hard call to make , I'm interested to see what everybody else thinks.

If the rights of the people (note it's not US Citizens) are granted by our creator, then every person has them and the BoR merely declares them. Also, the BoR is more about limitations on our government so that our rights are not infringed. Disclaimer: my interpretation, but I am not a constitutional scholar and IANAL

I already covered the Texas requirements. But the Texas requirements incorporate Federal requirements. And "citizenship" may be the wrong term here. I'm asking under what conditions/visas, etc., somebody who isn't a full citizen can buy a gun, and therefore be eligible for a CHL.

Those guys were the exception. Upstanding 2A supporting, legal imagrants are good to go in my books. Get some good professional training & your CHL. Hope you never need it but better to have one & not need it than to need it & not have one.

You don't have to be a citizen, simply a legal resident. However, I believe you also need a hunting license for some strange reason, either to buy a gun or get a CHL or something like that. I'm not sure why I'm thinking a hunting license comes in to play somehow, but it's there tickling my brain.

Can anyone else chime in on this? If you're a non-citizen, but a legal resident, is a hunting license necessary for either purchasing a gun or obtaining a CHL?
