Gun Safes, multiple brands, opened by common tools -- or no tools -- by three year olds. Do you own one of these safes? Article here

All of these are relativly inexpensive safes (under $200.00 per the story). I don't think that I would trust even my least expensive gun to a cheap safe. The old saying you get what you pay for holds true here. Unfortunatly a child had to lose his life before it was brought to light. And yet the manufactures won't admit that there is a problem. Sounds like civil liability to me.

It's an ongoing challenge trying to find a solution that will keep the guns out of the hands of the inquisitive little one but still have them accessible at a moment's notice when they are not on my person. I notice this article talks about Stack on Products. I have a Gunvault and have heard of some issues with being able to drop them and them popping open. I tried this with my own from a moderate height and was not able to get it to open. I did mount mine so it would be much harder to do so.

Not everybody can afford a floor-mounted actual safe. They also tend to delay access (as previously mentioned) when seconds count.
Even inexpensive safes should not pop open when dropped two inches. Or have holes that open the safe when a screwdriver is inserted.

A safe should be bolted/mounted to something. Ever tried to open one of those small safes in a jiffy under pressure? They move around. Not good.

Remember, ANY safe that isn't bolted down is just a heavy shopping cart for thieves.

I have 3 in different styles and sizes. Even 1 the size of the Stack On safe that is shown. I have them all anchored either to the floor or in the case of this small one, anchored to the top of a larger safe. I am not sure what brand it is (may even be the one listed here as my wife got it) but it isnt going anywhere without the large safe. However, I don't keep any of my guns in this one.

Of course, a safe or a lock in general is only ment to keep an honest person honest. If the want it bad enough, they will get it

regaurdless of them being anchored, they should not open as easy at the video makes it seem. The real issue seems like they are making money so who cares. Until it starts cost them some money or creates a huge issue in the media they will not look at the issues.

I watched all the videos last night...seems like the producers rigged this to be more damning than it really is. The safe cracker taught his 3-year-old how to foil the safe...plain and simple.

I don't think there was any doubt about that. The shocking part was that the safes could be opened by lifting one side an inch, and letting it drop. That is something a 3 year old could easily do accidentally. Removing the bezel, then using a screwdriver to pop the catch would not be something a 3 year old would naturally do, but could easily be done by a thief, or maybe a troublesome teen.

It's not about understanding how it works, it's about understanding how and where to apply it. BIG difference. (Besides, the kid DID pry off the bezel, the father just removed it afterwards.)
