Finally got my AMD-65!!!

I picked it up yesterday from Mr. Bratton of Geek's Firearms. Phil is a great guy to do business with, and any transfer I do from now on will be through him.

I brought it home, familiarized myself with assembly/disassembly, and immediately swapped out the pistol grip for a MFT React grip with interchangeable back- and front-straps, and then swapped out the lower handguard for a Hogue model.

Today was range day. Having never fired any AK, I was unsure what to expect. I loaded a 20 round mag to start, and started sending rounds downrange, offhand, from 25 yards. Oh, my... The first words that come to mind are smooth. Smooth trigger, smooth bolt, and smooth shooting. Recoil was negligible, and muzzle rise was practically nonexistent, thanks to the prominent muzzle break. That muzzle break also helps it give off a loud report, and it shoots fire like a dragon, with the muzzle blast being visible even at high noon.I noticed I was shooting consistently left, but was easily on target. I backed upt to 50 yards, sat down at a table, and pulled out a sight pusher. After a few minutes, I had the sights dialed in, and was easily shooting 2 inch groups with just my elbows propped on the table. The sights are not the most user-friendly, and I would really like a longer sight radius, but I've already found a solution for that. A red dot optic will be finding its way onto this soon as well. After that, I passed it around to all of my firends at the range, and spent some time firing controlled pairs and doing ready-ups. I did manage to squeeze in one full 30 round mag dump, where the muzzle brake showed its true colors. Firing better than one round per second, my sight picture never got off the 8 inch target I was shooting at.

Not having another AK to compare it to, I have to say I was impressed. It was a very mild shooter, and easy to get off controlled rounds quickly. It may not have the accuracy of my AR, but I also have less than half the money into it that I do my AR. It was easily combat accurate, and I feel and increased sight radius and RDO will improve that. It is a LOT of fun to shoot...probably moreso than my AR. I can already tell that this won't be my last AK!
The AMD-65 that I bought is imported by TGI and built on a hungarian FEG receiver. It was $439.95 shipped from Bud's. I'd consider that a hell of a buy, especially compared to the WASR's I have handled, which seemed to be much less solid. In my mind, it would be a good buy at $100 more.
