AR Build: BUIS and scope help!

So, I'm building an AR for a friend. We've selected an upper and lower build kit. I need a little help picking a set of BUIS and a scope. They will be going on a rifle built around this upper:

He's giving me full leeway on picking the sights. The only requirements are:

1. The iron sights be folding
2. The scope be a Leupold

Suggest away!

This is what I went with:

GGG Flip-Up Back Up Iron Site Rear
GGG Flip-Up Back Up Iron Site Front
Burris P.E.P.R. QD Mount
Burris Timberline 4.5 - 14 x 32
FastFire III Red Dot w/Picatinny Mount
AR15 Righthand View2.jpg

Just remember, if the BUIS front sight is contacting the gas block or any other metal touching the barrel, it needs to be an iron sight (unless you like melty front sights :)

By definition, BUISs are made of iron.

Except when they are made of another metal?

For the benefit of others......BUIS has come to refer to metal folding sights.....which is why Magpul calls their sights the MBUS since they are polymer - and indeed should not be mounted on railed gas blocks.

Yes, yes, I'm aware of the irony of my statement (see what I did there? irony?... "rlol" ). My point is that sights like the MBUS shouldn't be used on mounts that have conductive effects from barrel heat.

Agreed :cheers2:

So, now that you guys have settled that...scope suggestions? I am considering the Leupold MR/T 2.5-8 with the illuminated reticle or the VX-R 3-9 with the Firedot reticle.

CQT with Larue offset BUIS.

This is going on my rifle that will be here in the next couple of months for patrol work. This combo has been described as combat effective out to 800 yards by some BTDT people I think highly of.

...(Hated to end that power sentence with a preposition)

He is going to want more magnification than the CQ/T. I'm also building him a 16" carbine with an Aimpoint PRO for shorter distances and speed work.

Got it. I still like the offset BUIS.

Not a Larue product per se, but that's where I would source them.

LaRue makes great stuff, and I'm not bashing them, but if you're looking for alternatives, the Knights Armament offset BUIS is also available for about the same price (http://www.knightarmco.com/shop/index.p ... ucts_id=96" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;).

A little lower on the price tier, and I like these more for reflex iron sights, it the XS XTI sights (http://xssights.com/index.php?nID=sight ... pID=sights" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). Good for "old" eyes that will struggle to transition from scope to iron in a jiffy.

A better approach is to get the YHM offset angle mounts (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/product/ARR-9691" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and put on whatever iron sights you want.

And now, straight from our "Huh?" department...offset BUIS from Amazon.com for $28.95 marked down from $220 (http://www.amazon.com/Front-Degree-Rapi ... B006X9DLQM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). No, I don't know ANYTHING about these, I'm just posting it in case somebody wants "incredibly cheap" prices.

There's some other offset sights that mount on top of scopes...fiber optic front sight...looks nice, but darned if I can remember the brand right now. :cryin

What is the price point he's willing to entertain? And what is the cause for the obsession with Leupold?

He's used Leupold scopes before and he likes them. I'm sure he'd consider something else if I threw it our to him. As far as price, he didn't really give a limit, but I am trying to keep it under $1200 or so, not counting the mount.
