I KindA believe the title says it all.
This week I am training 11 ladies. Several of them have their CHL & the rest are prepairing for it.
Folks are really recognizing the need & getting prepared.

So far I have never been called by a student that told me they were alive & their assailant was not & training saved their life. Hope I never get that call. I know personally one Instructor who has.

I have lost count of the calls & visits I have got over time from folks that said they were approached in a parking lot, gas station, incident at their house, .... where at best unwanted attention & at worst probable crime was at hand. Their general response was always something like: "Thanks to training I knew how to handle it." So far never a firearm drawn.

Some ladies have said, a yr ago I would have given that panhandler $$$s & then gone home & beat self up wondering why thy did it. No more.

Verbal assertiveness training is as important as arms training. Maybe more so since it is needed more often than the weapon.
As sure as you will never DO what you have not trained yourself to DO,
You will never SAY what you have not trained yourself to SAY.

No Personal Defense Instructor ever got where we are w/o investing time & $$$s in training.
CHL is good.
Yes, defense training is fun on the range.
It can be a life saver on the street.

Training builds confidence & confidence is not arrogance.
There is someone in your area. Do your homework. Find them & train.

Read about one of these tactical trainers in Memphis -- you know the kind, does 2-3 day handgun course, carbine course, etc. -- a couple weeks ago. Can't remember his name but he is apparently pretty well known.

He apparently has had 60-some students that have been in gunfights. All but 2 prevailed in the gunfight. The 2 people who did not prevail were unarmed when the gunfight started.

There is a lesson there as I sit in McDonalds drinking my morning coffee with my 1911 on my hip. Sometimes it slays me all the people discussing the lastest uber-mini pocket .380 with 4+1 rounds that they need to buy because they "can't" carry a full-size handgun. I never knew of anyone who got into a gunfight that said, "I wish I had a smaller gun and less ammo."

Anyway, it is my most sincere wish that I am lying on my deathbed sometime in my 80's reflecting on my life and saying, "You know, I carried everyday for decades and never needed that gun." But I won't say it was a "waste of time".

Funny, I used to tell my ex something very similar - that I hoped one day, when we're in our 80s, sitting on rocking chairs on the front porch, that she'd be able to tell me, 'see? see? All that gun totin' was just a waste of time!'

I don't understand all the grief on this forum about carrying a .380 pistol. It is better than not carrying at all and it is certainly not my primary carry.

Any weapon you WILL carry is better than any weapon you leave at home.

But the point is, there are better self defense weapons then the best .380 pistol / ammo combo... IF folks are willing to adopt clothing, life style, manners, and training needed to carry the better weapon.. If not, by all means carry your two shot .22lr, 9mm, or .380 derringer, or some caliber of pocket pistol.. It is better any day to have one of those on you when needed then a better gun at home.

Some cannot carry at all (military on post) some cannot carry due to life style or job (life guard, swimsuit wearing beach go’er, flight attendant)

The instructor Jumping Frog is referring to is Tom Givens of Rangemaster in Memphis, TN.

Some of my thoughts on the whole Personal Protection discourse:

A .380 or even a .22 in your pocket is much better than a .45 at home.

A High Point that a person can afford is better than walking around unarmed until you can afford that Kimber Ultra Carry.

A 1911, Glock, SIG, M&P, Browning, Ruger or others is no better nor worse than any other firearm.

A gun is not some magic talisman that will ward off evil simply by its presence.

You have to get training and then practice to hone your skills to a razor's edge.

Personal protection is hard, expensive work but, the cost in time, sweat and money can never be too high if you save yourself or a loved one.

I understand... Any gun is better than no gun... And I specifically went out and got me a KT PF-9 for summer carry the first summer I was here... Then I got to thinking... KT 7+1 of 9mm or XD 12+1 of .40 so unless I'm wearing a speedo (I don't own a speedo and the world is better for it) the 9 stays home or with the wife who will not entertain anything bigger.

I really need to find a defensive pistol course for the wife. She says she'd love to go but would like an all women class... Anyone got a suggestion in the Pearland/Friendswood area??

Definitely check Psc-range.com for possible classes there

Me too....

Even though I don't carry a .380 ( I own a few that are fun to shoot, including a beautiful PPKS)
I do have a P32 that I sometimes carry as a BUG.

Every time I hear someone say that anything less than .45 is a waste, I hear a little voice in my head saying "30.06 beats .45 any day, but good luck fitting that in your waist band."

I would bet that anyone who says that anything less than a. 45 is a waste would probably not be willing to stand in front of something less and take a round.

The boards own TLynnHughes is a great instructor - she is also facilitator for the A Girl and a Gun Group that meets and is VERY active at the Arms Room down in that neck of the woods. Look her up. Warning though, many of the ladies that get involved with the AG&AG group end up wanting more of their own guns and even trying competitions etc
