Feral Animals

I live well outside the city limits and have a few neighbors around. since I have lived out here (5 years) I have had a ongoing battle with feral animals, namely hogs & coyotes, both of which I have terminated with extreme prejudice.
However, lately I have been having problems with packs of wild dogs. Notice I said packs--usually 8-10 dogs in each pack ranging in size and color. Some of them I have seen running with coyotes and some are cross bred. One day, I had lunch with an old buddy who is now works for the sherrifs dept. I asked him about my problem and surprsingly, it is a common problem. Where I live is very near a county rd where the dumping of unwanted dogs takes place daily. He went on to say since there is no leash law in the county (not city) the county animal control (all of 2 people for the entire county)--joke, could only be called if the dog exibited rabies behavior or was vicious and/or destructive. He then added, the law states you have the right to protect your property and livestock from feral animals. I told him it angers me people literally dump their problems out to have other people clean up.
After an incident involving some wild dogs attacking a mama cat who had taken up residence under my garage, I have been waging an all out war on feral dogs. My AR has been getting a workout. I even pulled out my scoped M-14 for some longer shots. It is great practice plus I am helping eradicate a problem that won't go away by just ignoring it.
Current tally: 17 feral dogs, 4 coyotes, 1 red fox, 2 bobcats, 12 hogs (anyone who likes wild pork PM me; I have a freezer full)
Will keep you updated as the war rages on......

You mean to tell me you are using an
assault rifle?!
Didn't we just learn that those are not for hunting?
I suspect that you found the AR perfect for getting those dogs, since that is what the rifle was designed for....

Thanks Marshal,
I have been predator hunting with AR's and the like since I was a kid. I have a nice collection, my favorite is one I built together with my dad, it is 6.8SPC caliber with a DPMS lower and a CMMG upper. It is decked out with a harris bipod and a Burris 3-12x50. That 6.8spc shoots like a .223--real flat, but hits like a .270. Great Stuff.

I didn't like the M16 as a military rifle, and I don't own any EBRs. But the whole Zumbo fiasco (along with the possibility of a 2nd AWB) has convinced to at least buy a receiver or two, so that I can build at least a couple of combos. And I believe in having a sighted/scoped upper available in a different caliber or barrel configuration.

Yeah with HR1022 set to rocket thru the house and senate, I am set to buy atleast 3 more kits and a couple of complete AR's, along with some FAL kits as well.
I meant to tell you all, my dad killed a coyote with his scoped M14 varmint rig this evening, he used a hand caller-nice dog--will post some pics soon..

We're straying off topic here, but HR1022 is not going to rocket through anything. It probably won't even leave committee.
But there is a chance that
some version of an AWB will pass the House, possibly even get signed into law, before 2008. As a political reality, it's more likely that any bans will be held off until 2009. The Democrat majority got elected by being more pro-gun and "moderate" in key conservative districts, than were their GOP opponents. Voting anti-gun now will kill their majority status and Presidential bids for 2008.
If they're going to strike at gun ownership, it will be after they retain both houses and gain the White House in 2008. That's why 2009 is the year to worry about.

From the Dallas/DFW area (I used to live near Bedford) I am about 3 hrs.
I live 30 miles outside of Lufkin, TX near Sam Rayburn Resevoir.
I own personally 125 acres where we can do alot of hog hunting. My father has an adjoining 200 acres that we can freely hunt also. We have been cultivating this property for deer hunting for over 10 years now. It has plenty of corn and protein feeders on it, plus I have been feeding the roads lately for hogs. I took a 130 class 8-point buck off this property 2 years ago, and my dad too a 150 class 10 point, a monster this year.
As I said before, we have been over run with hogs, coyotes and wild dogs lately. Since 2 years ago, we have seen and killed some monster hogs, my nephew (currently in USMC serving proudly in Iraq-hooahh) killed the biggest hog yet off our property; a 254 lb boar last year, his tusk were over 4 inches. My dad has seen a hog that he has said will go over 300 lbs!! I have bet money I will bag him.
All the hogs and predators we can kill off this property, the better our deer herd will be. Me and my dad predator hunt about 2-3 times a week, calling coyotes/fox/bobcat at night, so far between me and my dad we killed 6 coyotes.
I also have a nice rifle/pistol range me and my friend built, I will post some pics--I am pretty proud of it.
We are in the process of building a shoot house to stay sharp.
If you want, PM me so we can work out a date to come down and shoot/kill hogs etc.

+1 on keeping the hogs thinned out, its a year 'round job.
My father in law has 400 acres just outside of Nacogdoches and we battle the Hogs every year. We pretty much leave the Coyotes, Fox, and Bobcat alone, but hogs get no mercy.
Calling predators at night can be exciting. I did that in the Hill country for about 20 yrs. before moving here.

Not surprised.
That area would be just at the far edge of the post oak Savannah. That whole area North of Centerville to Buffalo and West along Hwy. 79 from Buffalo to Hearne is crawling with "Yodel Dogs".
If I remember correctly, January and February are peak breeding months for coyotes, so more daytime movement and sightings would make sense.
We have our fair share of them right around here. It is a rare night that we do not hear them yipping and yowling in the pasture behind the house.
I like it!

Holy smokes you’ve been busy. So what do you do with all those(dogs) carcasses?
