Maybe I should not post this because I don't know anything about it, but I heard on the 7am radio news today that a state rep. or senator (did not catch the name) has introduced a bill that would require anyone buying/ carrying (dont"t know which) a Taser would have to submit to training by the DPS in the use of the Taser. The little news blurp did not say anything about a license or permit or anything like that. My only reason for bringing this up is should this pass, I hope they don't assign it to the CHL Unit for administrative oversite. They have enough work already with our stuff.

It would require a license, and DPS is charged in the bill with administering the program.

I have mixed feelings about the bill...

On one hand I agree that licensing something that is designed to be less than lethal is over the top...And certainly burdensome on an already overloaded DPS CHL licensing division...

I do not think this bill is necessary...These things sell at about $1000...Its really difficult, unless you have the $$$ to do it, to practice with the thing...

Anyone who would buy one of these probably has the money to do these things and then some...And to require a license to carry one just tells me this is another revenue generating exersise...

The other aspect is lets say you choose to carry one...Will it be required that you conceal it???

And if it is not required to conceal it, what kind of message does that send to the conventional firearms carrying community as a whole???

I haven't figured out a way to get behind this as yet...And I figured I'd throw these ideas out there for general consumption for what its worth...

I have a simple way of dealing with questions like this: When the legislature wants to make something illegal, it's a bad idea.

Price is coming way down, too. Taser Intl. is releasing really nice one for $299/$350 (without/with laser) in April.

But I agree - legislating them is a bad idea. Are we going to start licensing pepper spray next? Issue permits for martial arts training? Ban knives? Join the UK?

Enough already!
