Recently had the opportunity to shoot the Army Pistol Qualification Course at Ft. Wolters.

The Pistol Qualification Course was timed at a range of 25 meters. Positions were from the standing, kneeling, crouch and prone positions. Target was an E-type silhouette:

Our specific course of fire was 50 rounds for a maximum possible 250 points (there are others).

It was an interesting challenge. Very different than the Texas CHL shooting test. Trigger control, Natural Point of Aim, and cadence were the order of the day.

Anyway the State of Texas added a new Expert Pistol Marksman to the roster.

We used to send guys to the pistol range to qualify when they couldnt qualify with an M16 i dont think i ever saw anyone fail the M9 range. You had to pass a weapons qualification every six months or they could/would kick you out. So if a guy was close or over that and couldnt pass the M16 range they'd let them shoot the M9 range so they didnt get in trouble and then theyd have to take training on their rifle. I shot it once for fun.

The Pistol Qual has changed several times over the last 27 years, as has the Rifle qual.

Dont get me wrong, the pistol qual is easy if you have even a basic understanding of the weapon, load, safety use, unload, general sight alignment and some understanding of trigger squeeze.. that plus following directions and most anyone can pass... But the same is true for the rifle qual.

I have NEVER had a SOLDIER, Airmen, Ive worked with fail to qual a second time on the range.. EVER.

I' have shot the entire course of marksmanship at Marine Boot camp.. it too is hard to fail... and difficult to be very good at.

Actually, you can see the hole through which all 50 rounds passed right below the "5".

Awesome man!

I remember my pistol course in OBC.... Instructor talking to a group of us... "this is the end the bullets come out of.. this is the part you put your finger on... okay!, Let's go qualify!" It was a scary time lol
