I was shooting with my lovely wife and her brother on Thanksgiving out on his property and learned why everyone is so opposed to Hi Point firearms. We where shooting silhouette targets and he fired one round that hit way off target at a 4 yd. man sized silhouette when he fired a second round he missed the target all together. When I looked over at him to make fun of his spotty marksmanship I saw the mag fall out and several small pieces of plastic fall out behind it. he had powder burns on his hand where the slide met the frame and the back end of the shell "mushroomed" out and got stuck in the barrel hanging out about 1/8 of an inch out of the back. one side of the handle was missing afterwards and we had to push the spent shell out the back of the barrel with a push-rod he was lucky he didn't loose his hand. The lesson I learned is "you get what you pay for", so dont buy a Hi Point even if you can get one for like $150 and if you have one get rid of it.

Does anyone know why this might have happened? My guess is that the slide didn't come all the way forward and the firing pin hit the primer anyway, but I don't know I didn't see the shot only the immediate aftermath...

He can send the gun back to Hi-Point and they'll replace it. Then he can sell it.

It's called a "kaboom," and if you search the interwebs, you'll find pictures of kabooms in almost any manufacturer's pistols. This would be actually the first of I've heard of in a Highpoint. Most reports I've heard is that they are very reliable products.

Now, that qualified endorsement aside, one should never be caught dead with a Highpoint because they are UGLY!!!. I've actually refused to pick up and handle one of their reportedly reliable, and demonstrably inexpensive 9mm carbines at gun shows because I was afraid that someone I know might see me doing it. Whoever is in charge of those things at Highpoint has the design sensibilities of a bandicoot. They look like they were designed by someone who escaped from a Buck Rogers movie, attended Cal Berkeley to study the history of firearms, and were so traumatized by the experience that they spent the rest of their life stoned on pot.

The appearance, balance in the hand, the massive weight of the slide....the entire package....are an indictment of all arguments for the legalization of marijuana.

I've only been around one once at a range, and I stupidly accepted the offer to handle a guy's 9mm Highpoint pistol. It was so ugly that the electrician's tape he had wrapped around the grips by way of giving him a better purchase seemed completely in place. Now I understand Lady Macbeth's "out, OUT, damned spot!" mutterings better. I felt like I had handled a leper's discarded parts. I needed a shower and a gallon of muriatic acid to remove the stain.

Other than that, they're OK guns.

Can't beat TAM.

My first home defense handgun was a Hipoint .45. It went bang everytime and shot to point of aim better than any other handgun I have had. Morever it was so big and clunky that if it didn't fire, it made a great club.

That said, when I was going to take my CHL course I decided I couldn't be caught dead on the qualifying range so I bought a Ruger P 95 to qualify with.

OK, I just like big ugly guns.

I had a hi point 9mm for a toss around gun. It would go with me in the ranch vehicle when hunting and toss it under the truck seat.. Just a nice get dirty gun.

Out of the box it was flawless. Probably 600 rounds through it and never had a single issue.

No I didn't think to get any pics, and my wife videotaped it bu she managed to look away at the moment of the failure. But I think you guys are right about firing out of battery and he threw the gun in a burn pile and I didn't get ahold of him before he "destroyed" the remains of the gun.
