a number of years ago, in California, I had a couple of friends who were with the LAPD - I recall they used to carry their off-duty weapons in belly pacs - don't know if there were holsters within the belly pacs, or not

is anyone still doing the belly pac carry or have more modern holsters taken over ? thanks

I don't, myself, but if you Google 'belly band holster' you'll get lots of results to check out.

If that is the case, there have been some threads on this forum about fanny packs and carrying.
It is still done, in situations where wearing a traditional holster is just not feasible (like wearing scrubs or other type of clothing)

yes, fanny pack (as per your pic) is that which I was asking - thanks (the friends wore them "in front" vs on the "fanny")

Their old ones circa y2k were good. I sewed an outdoorsy patch on mine and it doesn't get a second look. A coworker bought a new one this year and the quality is not as good.

Funny I just bought one today. I plan to use it for when I am out with the dogs or at the dog park among other places where my usual mathods of carry doesn't work as well.
The only problem I find with them now is that when I shifted from stud muffin to muffin top a few years back, the belt doesn't stay up as well. I bought a bulldog pack for about $20 at cabelas. They also had a a blackhawk one for $60 but that far exceeded the projected useage I have for mine.

I use a black, leather pack worn on the belt rather like an OWB holster. It doesn't have the design of a fanny pack, though of course it has to be unzipped to get to my pistol. It also has an outside zippered pocket that holds my spare magazine, and a small assortment of other things. It has the appearance of something that might contain binoculars or something, perhaps medical. Does it look dorky? Yep... Do I care? Nope...

It's great for bike trips and summer use.

I can no longer bear to wear a "cover garment" over my kydex OWB holster in the Texas summer.

Downside of course is it's not a lightening fast access, but it's relatively fast and that slower access is a risk I'm willing to take.

I am looking at this one. I wear scrubs to work and feel that this is the best answer for me when I am in scrubs.

Those are almost instantly recognizable by anyone who carries. Especially if it has a 5.11 tag on it. They won't "know" you have a gun in it, but they will sure think it is a possibility. It may not matter if you don't care when savvy people think you are carrying. The hanging tabs for a quick pull can be a problem when they catch on something and "rip" open your fanny pack at the wrong time. Had that happen once to a fanny pack I was carrying in while at a park. Luckily I was able to turn and block the view of others while I zipped it back up. I wore scrubs to work for years and carried concealed--but not in the fanny pack . A good belly band, Kangaroo carry, Thunderwear, 5.11 Holster Shirt, etc may be worth a second look.
