Today I was at a jewelry store in Frisco buying something for my wife for our 1 year anniversary. Not to mention any names but it was a Jareds. Anyway they have armed security on site and me being the nosey guy who likes guns that I am, was trying to discreetly check out his gear and sidearm.

This guy has on a Uncle Mikes style holster, you know the type that are like nylon with the extra mag pouch sewn on the front (not a bad holster but come on, for duty use?). This thing looks like it is about to fall off his belt and the pistol could fall right out. It was hanging really loosely so the grip was hanging out away from his body. And to top that the retention strap was NOT snapped. Someone could of easily walked up behind him and taken the pistol out with out any effort. That just made me feel really safe in that place, let me tell you...

Ok, I am done now.

p.s. this is not a dis on Uncle Mikes holsters or security guards

This would have bothered me too.
A part of me would have wanted to speak to the manager about this, but a part of me understands that people are paranoid when a civilian talks about self-defense and a firearm.

It is sad that so many in that field care so little about their appearance and safety.

If you could have gotten a company name from the shoulder patch a call to them would have been appropriate.

I see uniformed security wearing $20 holsters more often than the good kind. But when you consider how little they're paid, it's not surprising.

Seen those types of holsters... definitely not the best. The whole holster can come loose when you draw.

A buddy of mine had one, but I convinced him to get a Kydex holster to replace it.

Quick side note-- *chuckling*

We went to a Jereds (off 1960/59 in HOU I think) a while back. They had a no gun sign and text about no guns allowed that included a big red 51% .

We thought-- cool-- jewlery and drinks !!

Back on topic-- Robin had one of those Uncle Mike' holsters-- she tossed it.

This bothers me too. I can't speak for that particular securtiy company, since I don't know what it is, but a lot of times the companies themselves are in to save a buck and will give cheap stuff like that out. Then there's the particular guards that think "a holster is a holster, is a holster". It is sad. I agree with TXI, though, a quick call to the company about the way it was displayed would probably help. However, it all depends on how "interested" the company is as well.

It might be good that they are slow on the draw.......it appears that in Houston the security folks are shooting at each other

Security guard accused in Sharpstown Mall shooting

One security guard shot another during an argument at Sharpstown Mall this afternoon, later turning the gun on himself, police said.

The two security guards were spotted arguing just outside the mall about 3:45 p.m. when one security guard, believed to be an Iraq war veteran, pulled a gun and shot the other guard in the jaw or neck, said officer Keith Lovelace of the Houston Police Department's homicide division. Both men are expected to survive their injuries.

The shooter then retreated to the other side of the mall, where he was approached by an HPD patrol officer responding to reports of the attack, Lovelace said.

The officer noticed the SUV's driver was wearing a uniform, so he "stopped to ask him if he had any information on the suspect," Lovelace said.

But as the HPD officer approached the SUV, "he realized this man was the suspect," Lovelace said. Suddenly, police said, the gunman pulled a weapon and shot himself in the head.

Both men were transported to Ben Taub General Hospital, where the victim, identified as Robert T. Davis, is expected to be released tonight. The shooter, whose name was not released late tonight, was listed in critical condition in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

As officers poured over the abandoned SUV this evening, a woman who identified herself as the sister of the alleged shooter visited the scene. She said her brother recently had returned from serving in the Army overseas before taking a job as a security guard at the mall.

A witness who asked not to be identified said he was working at a sunglasses shop near the mall entrance when he heard a commotion just outside Shawn Mart jewelry store. Moments later, a security guard stumbled through the doors clutching a bleeding wound near his neck. He staggered and then collapsed as shoppers and mall employees wept and screamed in panic.

Hours later, the mall was bustling with customers again. Occasionally, a curious bystander stopped and lingered in front of Shawn Mart to stare through the lowered metal security grate where a patch of blood was visible on the gray carpet. A few feet from glass cases full of gold and silver chains, a bloodied white shirt remained bunched on the floor as investigators took pictures and interviewed the store's clerks.

'' wept and screamed in terror ''as opposed to make use of cover, call 911 and be prepared to produce your weapon if threatened.

It's pretty bad when people openly carry in such a sloppy and negligent manner I am concealed and still protect my weapon from unauthorized use better than that and would be much more cautious in an open carry situation. When carrying a weapon your #1 priority should ALWAYS be protect your weapon at all cost.

First, as a security officer, when I do carry, I have a level 3 holster. And you are right most companys do not care about what type of holster the security officer carries.

I have one of these Uncle Mikes, it is delegated to "protective carry."

Because it "protects" my weapon when I don't have on.

"As officers poured over the abandoned SUV"

I have this mental image of uniformed LEOs in a liquid state sliding onto and then off the car's body. But I suspect the writer ment "pored".

And this in a major newspaper. sigh
