Potential city owned Gun range in Alvin Texas?

I saw in the Alvin city hall agenda to "consider approval of a proposal with C. Vargas & Associates, LTD for $28,500 to complete a conceptual master plan for a potential municipal shooting range". This seems like the start of a slow/expensive process. Has anyone heard of this item before?

While I like the idea of having a gun range close to me (I'm an Alvinite), I'm not sure I want it city owned. It seems to me that privately owned ranges would have a hard time opening in Alvin if they so desired due to the city not wanting any competition.....or do I just need to take off my tin foil hat?

As I have posted on this forum many times, if you want to go to the range someday, just make a post a few days before, something like "Someone want to take me to PSC on Saturday" and there are enough members here, that I am sure until you are off the wait list, someone would be glad to take you over.

Hopefully the wait list isn't too long, but trust me, it IS worth the wait!

Thanks to SB766 that passed last session, cities cannot regulate shooting ranges, so they can't stop a private range.

I think what he is saying is that a municipally owned range would undercut the financial viability of a private range, not that they would try to directly regulate private ranges. And he has a point in this, especially if Alvin is small community.

Now that could certainly happen.

In my experience most of the municipal ranges are pretty good, but they have more restrictions on activities that are very important to me - such as a self-defense range where you can draw from the holster.

Yes, this is what concerns me. That said, I agree with Wild Bill. I work in Texas City. The city owns a gun range, probably the safest range I've ever been to, but they don't have much selection (if any) for training or competitive shooting.
