VA gov. made some remarks about it being a "timely discussion"

Sorry I know there is a way to make that link look better, but don't know how to do it.

I truly believe that one of the ways to protect schools is to arm teachers.
Our oldest son is an athletic trainer for a high school north of Houston. His wife, our first D-I-L is a special needs PE teacher. Our second D-I-L is a high school AP english teacher. Our second son works in radio. Three out of four educators.
Our oldest D-I-L is rabid antigun, anti carry. She has forbid me to carry around our two grandchildren. We have reached an impasse about it since I informed her the only place she can control when I pack is in her house. Our oldest son takes her side. He used to be an avid hunter and shooter with me but now he cowers to her rantings. I wish he would grow a pair. Our other D-I-L is not so anti and is coming around. Our second son has his CHL and carries most of the time.
Based on my observations of educators I think that the largest roadblock to protecting our children is in fact the teachers and administrators themselves. Compared to the populace as a whole they are more anti than society in general and drink of the liberal koolaid constantly.
Just an observation. The education system is our children's worst enemy.

3 out of my 5 kids are in education. All 3 as well as their spouses have CHL and all wish they could carry on campus. Especially the one that lives in the valley. Her school playground backs up to the Rio Grande and she watches illegals come across daily.

And in more ways than just preventing their protection. The education system is responsible for indoctrinating our children (and grandchildren, in my case) into the rabid liberal, anti-gun, tree hugging, curly-fry light bulb loving, hybrid car mindset. Little Johnny may not be able to read, but he sure can recognize a "bad" lightbulb!
(I apologize for my off-topic rant, but i believe many of the problems we see with the "47%" that believe the government is the solution to every problem is created by the public education system.)

My daughter started teaching in August at a private school in McKinney after finishing school (almost). She got married in June and since then they bought a pistol for home defense and started going to the range together. Funny how when I would ask if she would go with me before she was married, she would not want to go.
I am glad they are both taking it more seriously though. They have talked about getting their CHL's, but $ is a problem just starting out. An early birthday present may be in order from Dad.

I have talked with a few teachers who are anti-gun, but they are a small percentage of the total Texas teacher population. Most, if not all, of those are "not from around here."

On the other hand, I've received countless email from teachers and their spouses asking that we modify the employer parking lot bill to cover primary and secondary schools and not to leave those teachers out of a campus-carry bill.

Absolutely! Please do not leave our primary and secondary teachers unprotected!

Doing so ultimately leaves our precious children unprotected and at the mercy of the Adam Lanzas of the world.

Exactly my point. The first responders should be the ones who are already there.

Thanks for this. My D-I-L's rants have left me quite disturbed.
There is hope.

I think we lose a bit of the 'sound bite' battle when we talk about "arming teachers". It connotes providing them with a weapon and (implicitly) responsibility to also function as security guards. I think we should focus on giving the teachers the freedom to defend themselves if they so choose. If a teacher holds a CHL, they should be free to CC while at their jobs. Lifting that prohibition would NOT mean that teachers would be required to carry, but that they would be free to do so (as I believe all non-felons should). And given that "concealed means concealed", any BG plotting an attack would not know who was or was not carrying. It would put a significant unknown into their twisted equation of reasoning. The deterrent factor could be enough to sway them away from targeting schools in TX. If you place a uniformed 'guard' in the school, the BG will likely believe that once he takes care of that one, he's in the clear. Reasonable, given that VERY few schools would spring for more than one security guard. But if the BG thinks there may be other people that MIGHT be armed, it makes planning difficult. Removing the prohibitions against lawful carry would not involve additional hiring by the school districts. They could hire armed security if they so desired, but that should be left to the districts. Some districts can't afford security, so they just open it up for the teachers to CC.
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20121220/DA39D2U03.html
Also recall that a lot of the 'added security measures' in schools are designed to keep the BG out. So once they manage to gain access (as Lanza did by breaking in) the wolf will then have a relatively secure perimeter around the sheep pen. Anyone read that bit where the old Gunny told them how to overtake the 'compound' in "Lights Out"? Same issue here. Once inside the perimeter, the wolf can have a field day.
Some argue "But what about when the police arrive and now they see the teacher with a gun?" Don't know about you, but the discussion of police arriving at a scene was discussed in my CHL class (as it should).
But regardless, teachers should have the freedom to defend themselves against what has proven to be a less-than-non-credible threat. Remember, adults were also killed in Newtown as well.

Interesting how just one week ago, those of us eagerly awaiting the start of the 2013 Texas Legislative session and advocating campus carry were fine with limiting it to higher-eds. We couldn't even conceive of a situation where elementary & high-school could even be mentioned in the discussion. Yet here we are.
Too bad a more proactive approach can't be taken so that we can prevent tradgedies instead of reacting to them.
