Academy has these for $279 and I'm really considering buying one. I've been reading the reviews on this one but they are very mixed. Anyone here have anything to say about them?

I was considering this gun also. However, the reviews I read on Buds Guns and Academy scared me off. I think I'm going to spend the extra hundred and get a S&W.

I have one of the ones with the carry handle and so far nothing wrong that I can report with it. Shoots dead on and I out a cheapo red dot on it and its a very good range toy. I will admit that the break down procedure is un-natural but for the price I am very happy.

I didn't realize s&w had one. I'll have to check it out.

I was at Academy just before Christmas, a guy behind me in line was buying 2 of them for his grandkids (Good Grandpa!)
they were $459 each, so less than the MSRP on SW Website

I too am thinking about buying one. My son and I like to shoot the AR, but who can afford the ammo? With the price of ammo, we shoot a lot of 22.

I've been trying to decide on one for a couple of years now. The thing is, I want something that does everything well, as accurate as I can find, and has a threaded barrel. There are so many conflicting reviews...

Save your money and get the S&W MP 15-22. I bought one 3 months ago. Over 3,000 rounds through it without even 1 FTF/FTE. I couldn't be happier. The most fun I've ever had shooting in my 41 years.

They aren't listed on the Academy website. Guess I will be making some calls tomorrow.

One thing to consider about the S&W M&P 15-22. I heard this from a gunsmith, when he was trying to figure out what was going on with a customers gun after the customer put on after marker muzzle attachment/device on it. The barrel you see is actually a sleeve and there is a thin barrel on the inside. This will probably not affect most people, BUT if you do want to put anything on the end of the barrel, you will have a big shift in where the gun shoots, because the weight of the attachment will alter the really thin inner sleeve. If you don't want to attach after marker gadgets, fake suppressors, real suppressors, you are probably good to go with the M&P 15-22, but in case you do, you may want to go another route.

I looked at the Mossberg while I was shopping for a .22 AR.
By "looked at", I mean I read one review and ran, because it had a pic like this:
Now I'm no expert, but that looks to me like something hastily thrown together to cash in on the high interest in black rifles over the past few years.
I ordered an M&P15-22 instead.

I'm not too sure the gunsmith had that right, at least in reference to the S&W 15-22. I know the Colt AR .22 platform has a barrel sleeve that requires a wrench to take off. My S&W 15-22 has a solid one piece barrel and has been awesome. I can't tell you much fun it is. After initially being skeptical of the whole "Tactical .22" thing, I'm glad I bought it. It goes on every range trip with me; and is easily the most "fun" gun I own. Best $400 I ever spent.

I have no real knowledge of the Mossberg product specifically, but generally speaking I think that the tactical AR replica .22 rifle is a great one. Similar ergonomics and sights and manual of arms, and cheap ammo. What's not to like? But truthfully, I don't really believe that
any .22LR AR15 has much value at a regular shooting range EXCEPT as a fun, inexpensive plinker alternative to any other popular .22 LR long gun. I think the REAL benefit of such a rifle would be an inexpensive alternative when running tactical scenarios like shoot-house exercises, and carbine matches, or some kind of inexpensive "3 gun" competition. But most of us, myself included, don't do that. We just plink away at a range. I take mine along whenever I got to DPC, and then I can practice shooting different steel plates from a standing offhand position, and that way I at least get some practice picking up different targets and shooting from a real stance, rather than shooting down a straight lane from a rifle bench.
Mine is a M&P15-22 which I overpaid for because I was helping out a friend in need by buying it from him. I gave him the MSRP price of $499 for it, even though it was a used weapon—
lightly used and well-taken care of, but used none the less. I could have just gone to Academy and bought a brand new one for the same or a little less, but I wouldn't have helped out my friend. Also, he had removed the original iron sights and replaced them with a pretty much worthless cheap red dot optic, and then he lost the iron sights. So I ended up buying a set of Magpul MBUS sights, and I put a Vortex Strikefire optic on it and tossed the el-cheapo sight.
The M&P15-22 barrel is a normal barrel. It isn't some kind of lightweight cladding surrounding a steel sleeve. It is also fairly accurate. It's not a match rifle, but it has pretty good practical accuracy, and it is certainly
as accurate as any of the many other popular .22LR platforms. I am actually considering having the end of mine threaded so that I can eventually mount a suppressor on it.
I suspect that the current panic buying is even making the .22LR replicas more scarce, as well as .22LR conversion kits for the standard AR. But if you can find a M&P15-22 for sale, new or used, you can't go wrong if you buy it. I really like mine, and it does not feel at all like cheap junk.

Picked up a M&P 15-22 in green at Academy yesterday. It looks and feels awesome! Now I just hope the rain holds off this weekend so we can go "Choot" it!
