Tonight, I polished up my first set of brass that we collected from the range during our last visit. I used a vibrator with corncob media to see how well it worked. I had 256 9mm and 112 40 cal and it turned out real shinny in about 1 hour 45 minutes. I was a little disappointed that then inside of the brass did not clean up. I have a few nickel that wen tin as well. I have not inspected any yet.

Has anyone been to the Cabela's Reloading "class" they hold on the weekends? Is it any good? I was thinking about going to the one this Sunday.

I went to Cabela's class this last weekend, everything they teach there can be learned online or here.

You are doing it right! Try separating the brass by caliber and don't worry too much about the case innards. If the grunge bothers you try swabbing out the brass using a bore brush before tumbling.

ultrasonic get's them clean, inside and out...primer pocket and flash hole

Thanks. I've spent the last week reading and researching and I feel as if I have only scratched the surface on this....

I have brass from the range and some more coming from Jumpy Frog, no primers as they are out everywhere and I am researching powders. I think I will start out with 1lb and see what I like and don't like. I am leaning towards Accurate #2 if I can find a local supplier but have been leaning in about 30 directions... I also like what I have been reading about Bayou Bullets for the lead.

I ordered equipment on Tuesday and expect it to ship in the next week due to very high demands. Off to Home Depot in the next couple of days to build a work bench.

Yes, I had it all separated to begin with but just decided to "chunk" it in. The problem with that is that the 9mm fits real nice inside the 40.

I'm not too worried about the inside so long as it doesn't affect the loading.

I saw them sitting there on the shelf and thought about getting one. Maybe next month.

Do most people pull the primer before cleaning? I have ordered a progressive press and figured I'd just let it take care of removing primers.

You're welcome. I hope it works out for you.

You can use an ultra-sonic cleaner after depriming to get the insides and the flash hole/primer pocket thoroughly cleaned out. I don't really worry about a little carbon inside the cases, but occassionally the primer pockets get pretty gunked up. Since you are polish tumbling, you'll have that "factory new" look on the outside, and I wouldn't recommend depriming before dumping the brass into the media, unless you want to pay a lot of attention to clearing the flash holes and primer pockets. But, when the nooks and crannies on your polished brass start getting a little too gunky, and primers start getting cranky when seating them, a buzzy wet bath with the brass stripped nekkid would do 'em good. And skipping a polish job sure ain't gonna hurt the brass any.

Also, after an ultra-sonic bath, when the cleaning solution has been rinsed off, you can dip the brass in a diluted solution of Birchwood Caseys Brass Case Cleaner for about 30 seconds and get a pretty darned good shine back.

I'm not trying to talk you out of the tumbler at all .... just offering another option for additional brass hygiene

I hand prime. When I first started reloading my obsessive side insisted on cleaning out each and every primer pocket. Now I don't bother.
Tumble, then deprime. Otherwise check that any residual tumbling media does not block the flash hole.

Edit: Oh, and toss that steel case out.

No, because to deprime I'd have to run dirty brass into my dies and perhaps scratch them up; I prefer tumbling first, then running everything through the press afterward.

As for the insides of the cases not being shiny - doesn't make a lick of difference. What does make a difference is to add a capful of your favorite liquid polish to the media (I use Flitz) - the brass comes out shiny in a quarter of the usual time, saving electricity and time.

Get a Lee Universal Depriming Die.

I never did go or call them. I ordered some of my reloading stuff from Natchezss and they are claiming shipping on the 21st because they are so busy. I saved about $20, including shipping, splitting my order up but now thinking I should have just ordered everything from Titan. I received my 9 mm press, book and and a couple other odds and ends.

The_Busy_Mom and I have CHL class on Saturday. I'll probably go out shopping early next week.
