Outstanding
Long-winded ... but I've come to the conclusion this discussion is too complex and too emotional to be conducted with soundbytes and memes.

I am an American. As such, none of my rights depend on a showing of need. I am a free man who has the right to define and pursue my happiness any peaceful way I see fit. The government does not grant me rights. I was born free. The legitimate role of government is to act as my agent to protect my rights; which exist independent of government. Americans do not beg the government for rights nor are they required to demonstrate a "need" for rights.
All liberals should be asked, would you rather live the way described above, or would you rather be viewed (to borrow Suzanna Gratia Hupp's words "as part of an unruly crowd that needs to be lorded over, controlled, supervised, and taken care of." One is the way of the lion, the other the way of the jackal.

Before I read the rest of the article I will point out that the first two sentences are seriously flawed, in my opinion. I'm quite peaceful, and I own an AR, but I can think of a few reasons to own one and self defense is in the top two!
Edit: Alright, the author went on in the "right" direction. Perceived flaws forgiven/forgotten.

Long, but very worth the read. Regarding the opening, it seemed more of a "devils advocate" statement.

its a great look at the negative view as a whole these weapons receive. my own mother had doubts on why i needed one when she heard I picked one up a year or so ago, until I took her to the range to shoot it and she realized its not even as powerful as my deer rifle. now she texts me in disbelief of the ignorant opinions people are spewing on them everytime a new story comes out. my girlfriend was even some what intimidated by them until once again, she took a couple shots with it at the range at which point her head quickly popped up off the stock and said 'I NEED ONE!'. Even listening to PM when he correctly referred to them as assault weapon style weapons is infuriating as the look and 'style' has nothing to do with their capabilities, which we all obviously know but most antis just do not understand. I showed a friend the parts that make them evil and he quickly said, yea, but it still shoots the same right?!

The vast majority of gun owners are entirely peaceful. In fact, CHL holders in Texas are more law abiding than law enforcement. For most gun owners, their guns will kill less people than Ted Kennedy killed with his car.

As with all the gun control stats that can be manipulated to say whatever one wants. What is your criteria for this statement?

Perhaps I should point out a couple of facts. First, no one should interpret my comments as indicating that the LEO community has a bad track record in terms of criminal convictions. That's not the case. Unless the updated data has changed dramatically, I expect to see that LEOs still have an excellent record, just as it was in 2007. I just point out that Texas CHLs have an even better record.
Secondly, I do not intend to publish the data because I know some intellectually dishonest people (a/k/a anti-gunners) will try to drive a wedge between the LEO community and gun owners by claiming we/I are/am attacking them by publishing data. I will give the overall ratios for LEOs.
Chas.
I have the results and the LEO record is still good and it hasn't changed much since the 2007 data. CHL's track record is 5 times better than LEO's.
Chas.

Let's see, Ted and his car killed one girl (that we know of) That would be 1 for 1 or 100%. There are 315 million people in the US. 300 million guns. There are around 7,000 gun related murders a year. Now that can be manipulated any way you want but it is still going to come up less than 1%.
