Hey guys,

I keep hearing from several different gun bloggers/podcasters (Tom Gresham being one of them) about the importance getting good training after getting your carry permit.

I'd like to take a defensive pistol course somewhere in the DFW area. I did run across 2A Freedom Shooting. They're close to me, prices look reasonable enough, but I thought I'd check to see if anyone has heard anything good/bad about them. Also any other recommendations for trainers in the area would be appreciated. Thanks!

His range is part of Quail Creek range on I35 just north of e Texas Motor Speedway.

If you want some combat situation training take a look at Craft International. They hold their classes at Rough Creek Lodge and the have all the credentials you could ask for. They also offer training for the Black Rifle and Sniper tactical training.

I ended up doing a Defensive Pistol course with KR Training near Austin. It was ok, but it was a long drive and I had to spend money on a hotel.

Any other referrals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have never taken a class with him (yet) but I have heard very good things about Wayne Dobbs and his classes from several instructors that I hold in very high regards. If they say he's good, he must be. Might take a look at what he has to offer. http://hardwiredtacticalshooting.com/

The notice may be too short, but Special Operations Systems will hold a civilian defensive pistol course (http://specopsystems.com/june-2013-training-overview/) June 1-2 about an hour north of DFW Airport. Similar to Paul Howe's schedule, they hold open civilian courses only occasionally.

I've not taken a handgun course with them, but did take a defensive carbine course a few years ago when they were teaching out of Adrenalin Proving Grounds in Greenville. The instructor for that course was a SEAL and active USSOCOM Team Lead; extremely high level of expertise, and one of the better 3-day firearm courses I've taken. Might be worth exploring the curriculum of the defensive pistol course.

I did Defensive Pistol Skills 1 instructed by Karl Rehn. Overall the experience was good, however I did not expect to be spending half of the day working on basic marksmanship skills (I feel that I have a pretty good grasp of those alread). Probably about half the class needed to be in Basic Pistol 1 or 2, and so the instructors spend most of their energy on those individuals. Karl was a great instructor. He takes a very practical approach to the instruction and is not overly "tacticool" which is something I appreciate. He also stressed the importance of non-shooting skills like situational awareness. One of the sub-instuctors did come of as slightly abrasive (to put it kindly), however it wasn't that big of a deal.

I wish we could have spent more time on skills outside basic marksmanship like clearing malfunctions or using cover, but I guess that's what Defensive Pistol 2 is for.

Overall, I would probably recommend it especially if you're close. The price was reasonable. Just be prepared to be stuck with a lot of beginner shooters in DPS1. If you already have your draw and reloads down, you might try to see if you could skip DPS1 and go straight to DPS2.
