I get a kick out of them calling this a "new threat". I have been doing this for more years than I care to count, probably not totally legitimately, but at least with no criminal intent.

When I was a phone man, way before 1984, I used to get into these apartment complexes where the telephone terminal was locked in a back room off a laundry room or something like that, and the phone company wasn't given a key. Instead of spending an hour tracking down a "super" or manager or someone like that, a quick study of the lock, selection of a key from my collection, and a rap with a screwdriver handle would often do the trick.

I have done this with regular door locks. many different styles of padlocks, desk and supply cabinet locks, and even bicycle locks.

Not new by any means, just recently came to light.

Well call me "stupid"...

I always thought a dead bolt locking mechanism had a "dwell" point that kept this from happening in this manner...So I never really gave it much thought after this...I didn't think the tumblers in the lock could be manipulated like this in a dead bolt...

But now that its on YouTube...Geesh...Cats out of the bag now...

So the spin off of this is now that we can assume we can make "reasonable" efforts to secure our homes and other places we go with "locking devices", now we know they are easy to defeat...

I should assume that it would be reasonable to continue to lock your doors, but I be fipswiggled if I am going to retreat any further in my home (Castle bill or no Castle bill) now that this has come to the forefront of "pop culture"...

Won't be long before they pass a "special" law against lock bumping.

When the children learn how to lock bump...All those trigger locks may become obsolete...

Not all dead bolt locks have the dwell point you refer to, but either way it has nothing to do with bumping, just keeping people from shoving the bolt back in.

Basically what bumping does is bounce the pins up against their springs while applying a slight rotational torque to the cylinder that contains the pins and key. Too much torque and the pins aren't going anywhere, too little and you have to try again. If you get it right, the pins jump past the point at which they line up with the cylinder and as they come back down the toque catches them there, and voila! the lock is unlocked.

The technique does not leave tool marks like picks do, it may scratch up the face of the cylinder, but otherwise it's virtually undetectable.

As far as trigger locks, well they are often four pin tumblers and as such are easier.

This is why having a burglar alarm also helps

The only real way to combat against this is to get a lockset with an uncommon keytype, and those are quite expensive.

Everyone (contractors) seem to go with the SWAGE-locks...

I wonder if this can be done with a "blank" key, one that has not been "made" for a specific lock...

This is not to say I am trying to get skilled at this or nothing...

I just don't want to think I'll have to "clear" my house if I think something funny is going on...Even if the door was locked...

You wait, somebody's got to be thinking that now...

I havn't shelled out $150/lock for Medeco locks yet. I doubt I will.

Instead, I treat keys like passwords: I NEVER give them out to anyone. If someone wants to get into my house, they'll be able to enter via a keypad on the front door, and I can set codes and change them. It's cheaper than a medeco lock.

Also, keep your house keys on a seperate keyring than on your car keys. if you EVER give yoour car keys out, take your house keys off the keyring.

I've had people have their house broken into by valets. The valet gets their keyring, with house keys on it, and they look in the glove compartment for your regestration with your address on it... if it's close by, BAM...

Another good idea would be to have an interior access only deadbolt, at least for when you're home. This is a fairly common setup in apartments, and would prevent a breakin of this sort when someone is at home. Better locks would be a more reasonable solution if you don't live alone.
