I see 17 HMR being stocked. I guess it's like .22 but smaller?

I want to buy a rifle to shoot it...what do I get? I would like it to be semi auto and hold more than 10.

Edit: Maybe I should just get a ruger 10/22? What are some good options for a 22 semi auto? I know squat about 22 rifles.

It is a necked down .22wmr with lighter bullets and a faster fps. My buddy has one in a Ruger bolt action and it is crazy sick accurate! Sorry that is the only way I can describe it. He shot it next to my dads 10/22 and while the .22lr round was very accurate the .17hmr had the holes touching on pretty much any shot out to 100yards. It is a great target and varmint round but I don't know if it really offers anything over the .22wmr. Someone probably knows more then me about it.

My daughter has a Mossberg 702 Plinkster in .22LR. We have 2 ten round mags and 1X 25 rnd Mag. She also has a small scope.

It is a great gun to learn the fundamentals of rifle shooting and target practice. Ammo is cheap...when I can find it!

I do remember that it was pretty expensive compared to .22lr ammo. That I can tell you. I am not sure if it costs more the .22wmr though?

If I order online I always buy bulk. Shipping costs to much and it isn't worth it unless you buy in bulk imo. Plus it is so easy to shoot 500 rounds of rimfire at a time in a rifle. Especially if it is a semi auto like the 10/22. Before you know it you just blew through 300 rounds when you have those big butler creek mags.

I think I paid $125 in Jan of this year.

seem to remember several issues with 17hmr and semiautos having issues. i think even a few companies pulled their semiauto rifles for that caliber if I remember right. Pretty much a bolt gun only round. Same as others here that it is a fun little accurate round from the few times I had a chance to shoot it.

Did some googling...came up with the issues of 17 in an auto. I think I'll just get a 22.

No-one makes a semiauto in this caliber anymore.

I think it's rimfire
pointy tipped bullets in tube magazines sometimes one pointy bullet set off the primer or charge on the cartridge in front of it..seems that could be an issue with any tube mag of it was dropped butt first from a rooftop... but I think some were going off just due to recoil

I dunno why the detach mag ones stopped production, I thought there was still one company making an AR-15-ish design in 17 HMR, doubt you'll find one though.

17 has become just a revolver type ammo from what I've found, Stores have the ammo still, guns aren't cheap, I shopped, decided to shop for other calibers of guns for which ammo isn't short supply; just window shopping so far

Not true. Volquartsen makes them. But they're expensive, starting at around $1500 I think. Those that have the Volquarten love them. Too pricey for me.

From what I understand, the problem with semi-autos is a gas/timing issue. Apparently, due to the relative power of the round and light weight bullet, semi-autos are subject to going off out of battery. I don't think it happens very much, but enough that most manufacturers aren't willing to accept the liability. So, it's bolt action or lever action. I bought a bolt action because they can be had cheap, and for the reason you suggest --I can find ammo for it. It's a blast to shoot.

All the bolt action ones I've seen have detachable mags. In fact, a lot of them seem to be 7 round mags, which makes me wonder if the reason for the 7 round limit in NY is to protect some legislator that has a 17 HMR.
