Do they actually condone carry in their stores, or do they just not know better? With all the talk of the "Wal-Mart walk", it seems they would be aware that it occurs. If open carry passes, do you think Wal-Mart will be an open carry safe zone?

They do not prohibit concealed carry, so does that mean they condone it? maybe not, but could be.

I think Wally World is an "out of sight, out of mind" place. Most of thier views are based on family values. In saying that, they don't sell handguns, so they would probaly ban open carry. IMHO..

Wal-Mart will do whatever brings in the most $$$$$$.

I'm really not sure about this one. Just to hazard a guess, I'd say they are neutral about it. I believe they aren't fans of it (at a corporate level), but perhaps feel that they would alienate too much of their public if they had a policy against it. I cannot prove or disprove this, like I said, its simply IMHO.

Walmart's official carry policy (regarding open or concealed carry) is that as long as it's legal in the state the store is located in, they don't care. That being said, there have been some issues in some states where employees and/or management didn't know Walmart's policy. And remember, Walmart is a private company and can refuse service to anyone.

I thought we had heard from others here that had contacted WalMart that had been told that WalMart follows each state's laws and allows whatever is allowed by those laws. Now, they could legally prohibit all OC or CC, but they choose not to and have gone so far as to admonish store managers that have posted signs prohibiting either activity.

Agreed, I don't support open carry as activism, just an illustration that open carry is allowed in Walmart.

Because of its size, Wal-Mart ends up in the middle of political disputes more often than it wants to. In the RV world, there has been a war for years between individual RVers who park in Wal-Mart parking lots over night (and sometimes are less than courteous about doing it) and some campground owners who feel that the "free" overnight parking at Wal-Mart is taking money out of their pockets. A couple of the campground owners associations have organized campaigns to get local politicians to ban overnight parking at Wal-Mart, usually for "safety" reasons. Most of those safety concerns have the same validity as AWBs.

Wal-Mart has been very gracious in the middle of the banter. They help to provide lists to RVers of their stores where overnight parking is not allowed. In some places, they have put up with RVers who parked for several days while seeing the surrounding sights and even putting up lawn chairs in front of the vehicles. I'm sure that they view RVs as a good revenue source since most of us stock up food and supplies and Wal-Marts while we are on the road. They have a combination of items that is pretty much unmatched, from an RV perspective, by any other single store.

One of the longest threads on the most popular RV forum is Wal-Mart based. If you think things can get a little rocky here, you should have been on RV.NET a couple of years ago when there was a new Wal-Mart related thread nearly every other day and there was bouts of incivility between independent RVers and other RVers who had worked in campgrounds and supported that point of view.

Based on all of that, my opinion is that the corporation and the store managers do their best not to get involved in anything with a political undercurrent. If we had a bunch of guys showing up in Wal-Marts with unconcealed weapons, they might act. As long as concealed remains concealed and they don't have to deal with it, I suspect they are going to look the other way.

That was their policy 14 years ago. Things change. Since at least 2007, their policy is to allow whatever the law allows. If CC is allowed but not OC, then CC is ok. If CC & OC is allowed, then that's ok too.

It is a little more positive than "don't care".

When Ohio passed concealed carry, there were a lot of businesses that initially posted "no guns" signs. When various local Walmart managers took it upon themselves to post the local store, complaints to corporate would always result in the signs being removed.

Either choice was "legal": state law supported a private business either posting or not posting at the business's discretion. So Walmart could have "followed state law" by either posting or not posting. They chose to always allow concealed carry.

Now open carry is different. Although many people do open carry in Walmart, if it prompts a complaint from a hoplophobic customer, Walmart managers can and do ask the open carrier to either cover up or leave.
