Turns out the 40% figure being thrown around is off by a factor of 10.

As The Washington Post has pointed out, this 40 percent figure comes from a 1997 report by the National Institute of Justice, a research agency within the Department of Justice, and was based on a telephone survey sample of just 251 people who acquired firearms in 1993 and 1994. This was years before the NICS system went into effect. Of the 251 participants, 35.7 percent said that they didn’t or “probably” didn’t obtain their gun from a licensed firearms dealer. Because the margin of error was +/– 6 percentage points, it was rounded up to 40 percent, although it could just as easily and legitimately have been rounded down below 30 percent.

In addition, if you subtract people who said they got their gun as a gift, inheritance, or prize, the number dropped from 35.7 percent to 26.4 percent. And, in terms of how many people actually buy firearms at gun shows, the data from this same survey indicated that in 1994, only 3.9 percent of firearms purchases were made at gun shows.

So, no surprise, but the liberals are lying again, and the lying media repeats it.

Survey of 251 people? Hardly accurate either way. We all know there are private party transactions at gun shows and that is what they are going after. FFL's are already doing the instant check. I doubt the liberals will let this go, and at some point this will be part of the "great compromise." Our political leaders will say they saved this or that, but gave up this or that in this compromise. The NRA and other groups should have been challenging this in the states that already do it a long time ago.

I still want to know where the LA mad man obtained his silencer. Those are illegal in CA.

This is the big camel nose under the tent. They cannot adequately police firearms sales without full registration. IMO that even with registration, the next step will be police checks of firearms inventory/storage in the home. Might not work out to checking everybody, much as FFLs today are policed, but you would be open for mandatory checks. Might as well as stayed with England, during 1776, if this occurs. Probably a Liberal's dream. I don't know if it still occurs, but I believe Oklahoma made you take inventory of your property so that you could be taxed appropriately? I do believe Germany makes their subjects do so, including pictures. Didn't the Beetles have a song, Welcome to the USSR, or some sort? The Liberal Progressive aka Marxism has been nibbling away at our rights since FDR. They are willing to sacrifice all for just small leftward movements. We can't compromise, I would rather lose all at once, after a full fight, than this death of a thousand cuts.
