Smith Enterprise Letter to Governor Cuomo Regarding Gun Control

Dear Governor Cuomo,
Over the last several decades, Smith Enterprise has sold various firearm related products to state agencies and police departments in New York. However, due to the changing political climate and anti-gun politices coming from your state, we are forced to make some changes in how we do business with your government agencies.
It is improper for us to sell items to state agencies and law enforcement that law-abiding citizens are not allowed to purchase. Effective immediatly Smith Enterprise will no longer sell items to your state government that you have outlawed your citizens to buy.
Until your state changes your gun control laws and ensures these laws are back in line with the 2nd Amendment of the United States Constitution, Smith Enterprise will be forced to keep this policy.
At a time when crime is rampant and people are becoming more and more desperate due to the struggling economy, it is imperative that state and local governments support the people’s right to defend themselves from would-be attackers. The police have nothing to fear from law-abiding citizens with guns.
When you change your gun laws back to something more along the lines of what our country was founded on, please let me know and we will reopen our sales in your state to government agencies.

Awesome letter. I wonder what dollar amount this represents. Will it have an impact on the departments?

I don't think that any of the companies who have decided to stop doing business with NYS law enforcement agencies will make any significant dent in the whole thing. Even Oly Arms doesn't do a large volume of sales (though they do make a LOT of barrels for other companies). But I appreciate the symbolic stand that these companies are taking; I just wish even ONE of the big dogs would sign off on this, and send their own letter. I would think they could risk dropping sales to one state and not really hurt their bottom line.

I would love to see this so wide spread that it creates a squeeze on the purchasing departments.
What if they have to rely on straw purchases from other states to get through it?

I like the initiative that a number of these companies have taken, but I'm afraid at least the manufacturers will be circumvented by FFL dealers and distributors that will be willing to sell to NY state agencies. I wonder how common it is for the departments to order directly from the manufacturers. Well, I guess at least that will stop.

Yup, wake me up when Colt, Ruger, and Springfield do this. Hopefully they will see this as an opportunity for solidarity and not "increased profits."

I realized when I posted this that it would represent a small part of total run related purchases by New York police agencies. Out of all of the guns and accessories I own, I've spent money on two Smith products, a couple of their VORTEX flash hiders for my AR15 Carbine and AR10 SASS rifle. At roughly $75 each, that's not that much money.
Still, it is one more voice in the mix, and every one helps. If more and more smaller gun and accessory makers take a similar stance, maybe it will help the big boys to get on board.

Having not bothered to research, but feeling perfectly free to speculate, I would suggest that companies that have stock-holders will continue selling to the state of New York and those that don't will be sending them similar letters.

With a public company, it all depends whether management thinks the sale increase/market share gain from the good publicity within the 2A community will be greater than the lost sales to New York.
Of course, when your production is backlogged for 12-18 months, one can afford to be a little pickier about revenue. The margin are going to be higher selling to the general public that competing in a government bid anyway.

Do you think it would do any good if we all contacted the majors with our request to stop sales to NY and other states that restrict our rights? If so could someone provide the addresses to do so.
