I picked up a box of steel monarch (academy house brand) of 7.62 earlier today and there a date batch of "m279 2012-12" on the box. Any idea what this means? Are we getting old ammo? If it helps, i picked it up from academy in round rock

Dec 2012 isn't old. It was probably manufactured overseas and the distribution chain takes that long.
Now, if it was 30-40 years old, I'd call that old. But it would still shoot just fine anyway (assuming it was stored properly).

Not old at all. I read a few years ago that when the war in Iraq was in full swing, they couldn't turn out enough .50 BMG ammo. So, they got cases of the stuff made during WWII that had been stored in bunkers, and tried it. Fired just fine, and off to Iraq it got shipped...a lot of it. As far as I'm concerned, if its made within the last year or so, its NEW.
