I live in Katy, TX and have been considering joing IDPA. I have only been shooting for about a year. I currently own a Glock19 9mm and have an Uncle Mikes' IWB holster. I love to shoot and would be very interested in doing it competively but the only training I have had is from my CHL class and some techniques I learned from a Glock video.
So I guess my question is, am I too much of a NOOB for IDPA? I don't want to embarress myself.
What would be the best local club to join and such?

They shoot out at Impact Zone (Brookshire) and are supposed to be a great group of folks.

You won't embarrass yourself, unless you're easily embarrassed.
Look at it as a fun learning experience. Just tell the Safety Officer that you're new at it and they'll guide you through it.

Don't let inexperience prevent you from getting some.

IDPA is a lot of fun...and a great way to gain experience shooting.

As VP advises, tell the SO you are new to shooting and He/She will guide you through it.

Everyone has to start somewhere. And don't be embarrassed, you won't be the best or worst they have ever seen. Go enjoy!

I am range & safety marshal at our local gun club. I think we are typical of any you would choose there. I assure you when new shooters come in we keep someone by their side every minute to teach them what is happening.

When we walk the coarse of fire there is someone w/ them giving options & "this is how I would do it" type teaching.
When experienced shooters are on the line someone is w/ the new shooter at an "observation point" with help on "watch how he does this..."
When the new shooter goes to the line if they are very inexperienced w/ handguns in general we keep someone on their shoulder all the time. If they need walking instruction through the coarse of fire, we do that.
Last month there was a lady that was brand new & we even let her modify the coarse of fire on one occasion. (cant guarantee everyone will do that)
She had only shot a handgun twice before the match. Less than a box total. She was small framed & not very strong. When it was time to shoot weak hand she was afraid to shoot left handed. We let her shoot it all strong hand & wrote the proceedure. She got the trigger time.
I tell all this only because I think we are typical & not the exception.
I cant guarantee how the next place will help you but I do believe you will get constant attention, good instruction, & excellent friendship where ever you go. Get in it.

No need to worry, new shooters are always welcome at IDPA matches. WestHouston IDPA (WHIDPA) has matches every Wednesday and the 1st Saturday of each month just west of you near Brookshire/Monaville at the Impactzone.
Wednesday is just two days away and the 1st Saturday match is this coming Saturday.
All we ask is a good attitude regarding safety.
