...drift off the front sight of my Mosin Nagant M44 and replace
it with a new one?

I bought one of these "kits" but it takes a very small amount
of filing on one surface of the (male) dovetail to fit into the
original dovetail.

I don't have the correct tools.

I live in Lewisville, and with my schedule closer is better.

I would take it to a gunsmith but I've had a .22LR in for repair
for like 8 weeks and they say it is likely like 4 or 5 more weeks
out.

I will be willing to furnish some refreshment. :-)

I will gladly lend my assistance in return for refreshment, but you should know that I don't have the tools either, have never done anything like that before, and would probably make it worse.

I have a sort of universal sight pusher/adjustment tool that I bought from a guy on THR. He makes them. I haven't actually used it yet, but I'd be happy to try it out on your gun. Caveats: You'd have to bring your Mosin to my house in Grapevine; the tool was designed to drift rear sights on pistols, but it might work; and you'd have to wait until after the 6th as someone in my family is getting married on the 6th and we've got a lot going on right now.

I watched some youtube videos last night and might get brave enough to at least make one
attempt. For the removal it looks like the key is a good vise to hold 'er steady. I may use
my dad's or even just pick one up this week.
The part I wasn't sure about is how to fit the new sight - exactly what type of file and how
much filing will be needed. The videos hinted that there would be very minimal actual filing.
Of course, I haven't done any measuring of the dovetail and the replacement sight yet.

And, Dave2, all your reasons are the reasons I want to seek help for my first "trial."
The comforting thing is that all the filing will be done on the new sight which is cheap vs
on the barrel of a more expensive rifle.

Mosin Nagant afficianado also - I love shooting my M44
even at my limited distance of 25 yards indoors.

Mine is a 1948 and all the serial numbers match - look
the same font to me also - except the butt plate.

They are pretty addicting. I've got a "few" laying around. The guy that makes those sight tools is on the Russian Mosin Nagants forum. Good guy and stands behind his products. You won't be disappointed.
