What would you do, if you found a firearm in this situation, as a responsible firearms owner, CHL, etc etc etc???

Let's see if history repeats itself???

If there was any information available, I'd call the guy, confirm his legitimacy and let him know all was well and be a good care taker...

Since it is unlikely any information would be available on a firearm on who is the owner, I would think that the prudent action would be to secure the weapon, go ahead and clear it...Conceal it and take it home...

Call the local PD, tell them the situation, and turn it into them to investigate further...Who knows...They may actually find the owner and return the property to them...It has happened before...

My Dad's S&W model 626, was stolen along with his truck years ago...The truck was never found, but the firearm was confiscated from the girlfriend of a known felon in Arizona, and eventually returned to my Dad, here in Houston a few months later...

I'd take pictures (for evidence if it became necessary), clear & secure the firearm, and immediately call the police. I would not remove the gun from the premises unless it was absolutely necessary.

You willing to wait till they get there??? For something you can take care of yourself??? A police officer taken off the street to pick up a gun somewhere???

Clearing and putting the firearm into a secured status, IS a better thing to do, it is NOT a crime, and you'd be doing something in the interest of public safety...Police officers are not the only ones who are responsible for public safety, in my opinion...In this case you'd get my support if you took it upon yourself and your knowledge of firearms to ensure the firearm doesn't fall into the wrong hands...

Ohhhhh, and since I would not trust an employee or even a manager of that facility, to safe the situation, that would be another reason people like us, in rare situations like this to act responsibly...

I didn't say I wouldn't clear the firearm and make it safe. Why don't you re-read what I posted (hint: it highlighted in red above). What I would not do is remove it from the premises (ie: the store) unless necessary. Removing the gun could, by some liberal DA, be construed as a crime.

Secure it and wait for someone to claim it. If they're the legitimate owner, they should know the serial number.

Are you serious? I don't know the SNs on all (heck, on ANY) of my firearms. I'd have to go home and look it up.

So go home and look it up. It's not like I'm asking them to provide a receipt or other paperwork documenting legal ownership. It's only reasonable to expect some stranger to provide the serial number so I have some assurance it's really their gun. Although, now that I'm thinking about it, maybe I should require some evidence they can legally possess a firearm.

Frankly, I'd rather let the LEOs sort that out. Seems to me a better option is call the cops, let them take custody of the gun, and let them deal with finding the owner. Hmmmm. I wonder if you get to keep it if the owner isn't found......

How embarrassing for the deputy. Good thing the weapon wasn't found by a child.

Without any indication as to whether the gun was used in a crime or not, I would be hesitant to touch or move it. I would prefer to call the police and have the dressing room cleared and secured. I would expect the police to give clear directions on whether or not to clear and secure the weapon. It's not going to be a danger sitting there with the room cleared and secured.

Store management would be notified. Loss Prevention, if any, could assist with video surveillance tapes should they exist.

No excuse for the deputy , but this happens and not just to LEO's. The only difference is the LEO makes the news.

Unfortunately, it can happen to anyone if they let their vigilance slip. LEOs tend to make the news because, right or wrong, they are typically held to a higher standard by the general public.

Clear it, secure it, conceal it, and as soon as I was out of the Shopping Center, call the 5-0 and tell them.
