Travel dilemma...

I live in Austin but am traveling to India this coming Thursday leaving from Houston. I am driving to Houston because I will need to pick up my Indian visa from the consulate early the morning of the flight. The dilemma is that I don't like coming to Houston unarmed, but will be leaving my car at IAH for 10 days. I know I can take my keys with me, but don't feel it would be safe to keep a gun in the car, even in a monitored covered lot for that period. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good temporary storage solution while my car sits and I am out of country?

I would suggest leaving it with a friend in Houston but you probably thought of that already. If nothing else works out, you could pawn it Thursday and then redeem it when you return, assuming the pawn shop's business hours are convenient for your flights.

Yeah our only friends remaining in Houston are rabid anti-gunners, so I wouldn't even consider that. The pawn idea is interesting and outside the box. Thanks for that.

I travel out of that airport several times a month.

I'd suggest locking it in one of the small gun lockboxes made for attaching to the car seat frame and leaving it in the car in one of the privately run fenced and covered self park lots just outside the airport entrance. I've used that technique successfully many times. I seriously doubt you'll encounter any trouble.

Thanks! Do you know if they have these at Gander Mountain or Bass Pro storefronts on the way in? I'll give them a call if not.

Maybe I need to start a gun locker service; drop it off before you get to the airport...

There's a Gander Mountain on 290, and a Bass Pro Shops in Katy. I don't know if either one has lockboxes.

Most of the Academy stores seem to sell those lockboxes for $20 or so. The brands keep changing, but usually there's a choice between keyed and combination lock, with the keyed running about five bucks less.

I suggest saving yourself some stress by getting one at an Academy near home before you leave town. Cabela's has something similar for a few bucks more if that's more convenient.

I bought the one I'm using at Gander Mountain.

Isn't that what "truck gun" is for? I've got an old 38 that was fairly cheap and I could easily replace. That is the gun I would leave in my car.

Interesting language on their web site:

We require at least 48 hours notice prior to collection. No guns may be removed from our premises without payment in full of any outstanding invoices, and sight of a current shotgun / firearms certificate. Please note that it is illegal for us to hand over any gun without seeing the original certificate.

Anybody have a "firearms certificate"?

My lockbox cost about $100.00 and every time we go on a cruise or long trip and leave guns in the car, it gets cabled to part of the chassis.

It sounds like a place to avoid like the plague for those of us without original firearm certificates.
