Stopped by my LGS today on the way back from the NRA convention... They had a DPMS Oracle RFA3-OC going slightly above MSRP and I pulled the trigger and bought it... it's the black one on this link:http://www.dpmsinc.com/556-ORACLE_ep_135-1.html

Not exactly in love with it, so here are a few things I'm going to do:
1. replace the straight trigger guard with an enhanced trigger guard
2. I don't like the stock... may put something like a A-4 collapsible buttstock
3. the pistol grip... hmmm, would like something a bit bulkier

Not sure what to do about the sights... this is an optics ready AR, has the rail on top... I'm thinking about a cheap red dot...

This is going to be a plinker... will probably shoot from sandbags, so not looking to put a bipod on it, perhaps a foregrip, although I like the handguards the way they are right now...

What would you do to it? Looking for ideas...

I have several ARs with that upper. Bought the uppers from Midway for $342 each ($387 after tax and shipping) and slapped them onto complete lowers from New Frontier Armory for $99 each ($108 after tax).

Real nice sub $500 AR. Like the lower as much if not more than the DPMS lower I've had for a few years.

Triggers are kinda tuff.

The trigger mechanism on an AR is one of the easiest to work on as long as you are just taking one out and putting another one in. Now polishing the engagement points is another story. Have spare parts when you do that.

The OP said "Trigger Guard" not trigger. Changing a trigger guard is simplicity defined.

I have an LR-308 and the trigger leaves a lot to be desired, now depending on what you are going to use it for it may be fine but the stock trigger is not a smooth crisp trigger. Honestly my mosin has a smoother trigger, maybe it is because of the newness but first chance I get mine is getting replaced.

Sorry the modifications the OP suggested were about all I would do. So I didn't make any suggestions. In addition to his suggestions, this is what I would do it if it were mine. If is strictly a plinker, there's no pressing need for backup sights, put an inexpensive red dot or scope on it > $100. JP trigger spring kit ~$20. If it's going to double as a HD gun then a light $30-40 bucks, and a sling.

I don't intent to mess with the trigger at this point, so the mods I'm planning are simply to make it more ergonomic... and I want to keep it light so my daughters can handle it. Although using it as a backup HD is intriguing and I'll look into perhaps adding a light as MoJo suggested.

I have this exact same rifle and have similar feelings on it as you. Anxious to see what you do to it and will probably follow your lead.

*edit. I bought mine from a guy moving away and since the deal on it was great, I didn't really look that close at the area around the front sight. When I realized it did not have the bayonet lug I was disappointed.

Is there a way to remove the cylindrical piece on the front and go back with a front site post with a bayonet lug. If so, does anyone have any recommendations for a front sight with a bayonet lug?

For the grip you might like the Magpul MOE grip or the Bravo Company Gunfighter grip.

Looking into:
1. Trigger guard: Magpul enhanced trigger guard... there's one that has the Texas flag engraved
2. Grip: Magpul MOE Plus
3. Stock: Magpul CTR or STR... leaning towards the STR due to the extra cheek rest area...

Haven't looked at red dots yet... that's next

I knew when I bought it that if you put a front sight it's meant to go on the gas block rail, and changing that is a little more than what I have to do, so not really considering a messing with that or a bayonet lug...

cdc101, keep in mind that the buffer tube is commercial when you're looking at stocks... so get the right size when buying... I am not looking to change it to milspec.

First thing I would do is make sure DPMS staked the carrier key and castle nut.

If your going to replace the grip and trigger guard just get a Stark Equipment
SE-2 AR-15 Sling Grip. I've had these on my AR's for a while now and wouldn't change them out.
