Ruger GP100 & Simply Rugged

Local gentleman did not shoot it any more & wanted to sell so, being the Good Samaritan that I try to be, I helped him out.
He had the sights cranked all the way to the right so I have reset them to factory center. I will shoot it later this afternoon when Mom gets here. We are going to the range for her last shoot before Sat renewal.
I will shoot this one too & give a report on it when we return.
Lock up is excellent. Typical Ruger. The single action trigger has a little creep & about a 5lb pull. Double action 12 or better. Typical Ruger. Not as good as Smiths. I will have it worked over before the start of hunting season I hope.

Simply Rugged holster. This will be a field holster while hunting or taking the Grandkids fishing. I got the 6 loops so I would have some ready reloads w/o having to carry a speed loader in the field.
I have worn it all day yesterday & today to break it in. It sets tight to the body rides at good height for draw. It covers the barrel very well & that is good for a field holster. It actually conceals quit well. While working today it was chilly & I wore a heavy cotton long sleeve shirt over it. No print problem so when hunting season rolls around it will cover easily.
It does close up after draw enough that it requires both hands to reholster but not difficult.
At first the shell loops interferred w/ inserting the gun. After all night in the holster that was no longer an issue. In & out very smooth.
The 3rd belt slot gives the option for crossdraw while setting. I have had it strong side all day & in the truck or a chair it is very comfortable sitting.
Lead time was 10 weeks.
The name says it all. No frills & not the beauty of a Tucker but rugged enough to take a hard day in the field & do a great job of protecting a good gun. That is what it is supposed to do.

That is a nice looking setup LT...I love those Rugers. I have never had any trigger work done on one......I bet it makes all of the difference.

Good post, LT, thanks for the info.

I'm glad to hear you're pleased with the Simply Rugged, I've been emailing Rob back and forth trying to get the sort of info you mentioned, been considering one for a while. I'm glad to hear it worked out well for you!

Range report.
Mom shot in preparation for her renewal this coming Saturday.
Did a little warm up then I ran her through the proficiency drill. She shot a 245. Not bad for 76yr old. I can tell she wants to hit a 250. Hope she does but I keep telling her that a 15 yd pistol shot is not an easy shot.

Before we left, I shot 18 rds through the new Ruger. (new to me.)
Ammo was reloads 158gr Lead SWC.
First picture is at 3yds. I shot one & the hole was my target for the other 5. Two hands standing double action. The pattern is 1.5 wide X 1.25 long.

Image

Second picture is at 7 yds. The circle is a 4" circle. I use a Jiff peanut butter jar lid. Two hands standing double action.

Image

Third is 15 yds. I used the head of Moms target. This is 15yds, standing 2 hands single action. Pretty evident it is a keeper. That is what I said about the last one. This one is staying. When I get a trigger job on it I will have to keep it.
Now I need a BBQ holster for it.

What do you hunt, LT? Since I did the Mojo sight job on my 91/30, I'm more than confident that I can place precise enough shots up to 200 yards for it to be a good rifle for hunting. I haven't practiced at those ranges with my M44 yet (it got a set of Mojo sights as well), but it would probably be just as suitable, if not more so due to the reduced length. I am working on getting the hunter safety course and license soon, and am interested in hunting some wild hogs. Unfortunately, the only local I know who hunts hogs is from Alice and that's where he does his hunting (on family property). I'm also at a loss as to how to go about finding a place to hunt. Everything I find online involves feeders and stands, which doesn't seem very sportsman-like to me, so I have no interest in that kind of setup. As far as I can tell, the only public land for hog hunting is in Williamson County (real close), but only allows bow hunting. Any suggestions?

NcongrueNt,
I hunt deer & a few squirrels. I will take a hog if he comes along. I dont really pistol hunt but want a heavy cal revolver in the woods if needed.
Also dead of winter & several layers of clothes make a .45acp a lot less effective.

Thank you Scuba.

Nice pistol LT. I like Ruger revolvers because they are true workhorses that get the job done every time. I won’t go to a stand without my 6 GP100. If you plan on taking a hog with it I hope you have some hard cast lead loads. I made the mistake of shooting a large hog with mine using Hydroshok bullets and the first 2 shots only made her mad.

When I go to the field w/ it I will be loaded for big hogs. That is about the only dangerous critter on 4 legs in the East Tex woods. I wont ask a BG to wait til I change loads if I need it though. ;-)

LT, my alltime most favorite revolver is my GP100. I believe it is identical to yours. Same sights, same grips.

DH hates the trigger on it, and I love it. So, at least I don't worry about it ending up in his range bag!

If you ever think you don't want yours anymore, remember me. I would give it a good home!
