I noticed the barrel on my shotguns don't have the mirror finish they should. I think i see some pitting. Has anyone honed thier barrel using used this system? Can/should this be done by a novice? Would paying a gunsmith do the work be a better option

My experience has been with older double guns, where barrel wall dimensions could be adversely effected by an inexperienced users application of hones.
I would recommend the use of gauge to determine wall thickness before using any type of hone on your barrel/barrels.

The Hosford gauge is easy to use, quick to set up, and could save you a lot of pain and/or money. There are lots of gauges out there, Midway, Brownell's, etc have multiple options in just about every price range.
Use of the gauge can also reveal pits, bulges and dents. if you shoot 3 inch, magnum, steel shot, etc. checking your chambers and bores should be a part of your normal maintenance before and after an excursion into the field.
I have seen the results of amateur application of hones on once valuable guns that are now object d'art aka wall hangers.

Just get some JB BORE Cleaner and a brass brush it will polish that barrel up.
