Experience Getting Permission for Pellet Range

In my city, it is illegal to discharge a pellet gun within city limits without a special permit from the police chief. I have a relatively large lot that is situated in a way that I can make a safe pellet gun range without bothering my neighbors (who would not be opposed). This is what the law says about getting a permit:
To secure such special permit, application must be made in writing to the chief of police, describing in detail the request of the applicant. Upon receipt of such request, the chief of police shall investigate said application. If the application is approved by the chief of police, he shall forthwith send to the applicant a letter setting forth the requirements or restrictions under which the permit will be granted.
I am tempted to apply for a permit. Has anyone on here ever done something like this before? Any tips? I plan on having signed letters from all adjacent neighbors, pictures of my backstop (behind which is a brick-walled garage) and the specifications of the pellet gun I intend to use.
