First off, I suspect that some of it might be jealosy. We have so much more freedom, more prosperity, and more power than they can imagine. They know that, just as they know they used to be the top dogs, the one's who called the tune. Yet today, due to their own cultural decay, they are mere shadows of what their forefathers were.
They know it. And they don't like it. And since WE have now assumed the role that their forefathers once held, and that their generation was too weak and stupid to maintain, they don't like us.
But it doesn't matter. If you read any of Mark Steyn's stuff in National Review, it's all academic. Unless current demographic trends are swiftly and sharply reversed (and there's no prospect in sight that anything like that will happen), in a couple of generations the Europe we know today will have ceased to exist. In its place, will be something variously called "Eurabia", or maybe, "Eurostan".
The creators of the European culture from which our own American culture draws its roots will be reduced to an irrelavent minority in their own homeland. And the treatment they are likely to get at the hands of the new majority will not be very pretty - at least judging by how the people who will form that new majority treat minorities in their mother countries.
So, who cares what they think?
The only point of interest to the outside observer is when the Europeans will wake up to the fact that their very existence is at stake. Will they fight for the world that their few children will grow up in? Or will they just throw in the towel and resign themselves to their eventual liquidation?
Dead men walking.

Came across that article yesterday also, what a bunch of loons. The German papers also wrote we deserved 911 and we caused the Global Warming. My how they forget things like East Berlin.

Their forefathers may have been giants.
Their fathers were tested as few others in human history have been, as were ours.
But unlike ours, theirs FAILED miserably.
The present day Euros are midgets, sufferring from arrested development of the mind. If you analyze their writings, you will see that they resemble overgrown, even elderly, children.
It is a splendid illustration of socialism's power to corrode the human soul.
I'm waiting for when they start to wake up to what is happening to them. It will make for some cool newspaper headlines.
Sure hope we don't bail them out (again).

What did they say about the German kid that whacked 16 people in a German school last year?

You mean the people who gave power to Stalin, Marx, Lenin, Hitler, Mussolini, Milosovec, and others?
You mean the people that gave us two World Wars?
You mean the people who've criminalized free speech, even jailing ministers for reading from the Bible?
You mean the people who allowed genocide to take place in Armenia, Germany, and Russia?
How stupid are THOSE people?
Do you REALLY need to ask?

The posted article from Speigel is just a collection of quotes from other European media. They did try to make it fair and included the following from the German daily paper "Bild":
Now we will probably begin discussing the overly lax gun laws in the United States. There, buying a machine gun is often easier than getting a driver's license. And a new ban on violent games and killer videos will also be put back on the agenda. But in the end, nothing is likely to happen. And the next killer already lives somewhere among us. But we have little reason to point an accusing finger at the Americans. Despite strict gun legislation, we (in Germany) have experienced the school shootings in Erfurt and Emsdetten. We have to consider the problems in our society. And we have to take care of our fellow humans.
