Does anyone know whether the background check for a CHL is different than the background check to buy a gun? And if it is, what is the difference?

Listening to all the stuff about the VT shooter's background just got me thinking.

Yes they are different. Our Texas CHL check is more extensive. Thats why you CHL exempts you from The Gun buyers check.

A background check would not have prevented him for murdering a bunch of people. Mental treatment prior to the fact or a CHL in class were the only two solutions.

Without knowing exactly what the extent of his history it would be difficult to say. But probably not.
