Finally Did It

After all these years, bit the bullet yesterday and got me my first ever 1911, a Springer mil spec black. Sure wish I did this years ago. Went on the internet this morning and it seems pretty easy to field strip. Really don't need it, but have wanted one for years. I dread having to tell my Glocks what I have done.

Quick question - before you remove the barrel you push the barrel forward, after you place the barrel back in the slide, do you put the barrel link back in the up position? The video on re-assembly did not show the link being put in the up position before putting slide back on receiver.

If I understand your question correctly, the answer is yes.

The slide stop must pass through the big hole in the barrel link when you reassemble the pistol.

You are right Pawpaw, I sure could have asked that question better. What I meant was when field stripping and removing the barrel from the slide, you push the barrel link forward so it can slide out of the slide. On the video, when he reassembled the slide he put the barrel back in the slide with the barrel link still forwarded and then mounted the slide on the reciver with the barrel link still in the forward position.

I haven't seen too many of those videos that I completely agree with, but that's not the point. As long as it helps you figure out what you need to do, then it's all good! Just beware of the "idiot scratch". That will haunt you for the rest of the time you own that pistol.

BTW, nice choice and welcome to the addiction!

You should be more worried about letting your 1911 know that you were "Glock Trash" before you met her. She might leave you.

1911 Pro Tip: when disassembling, ALWAYS keep the muzzle pointed toward the ground when loosening the bushing. Otherwise, you may launch that recoil spring into space and never find it. I had to learn the hard way and it took about an hour to find it.

Unless you are holding the frame upside down when you reinstall the slide, the barrel link just naturally falls in the downward position when you are sliding the slide onto the frame. No need to overthink it.

True enough in theory, but mine usually won't because I put a drop of lube on each side of the link, which is just enough resistance to keep it from swinging freely.

Besides, I like to put the guide rod all the way back against the link lugs. What I usually do is, with the slide still upside-down, swing the link up & put the guide rod (GI guide rod) against the lugs. Then I insert the closed end of the recoil spring through the front of the slide and slip it all the way on the guide rod. This allows me to keep the guide rod in place by holding the spring against the barrel with my thumb when I turn the slide right side up.

I don't know how great it is.... Often debated for sure, but only about as "great" as arguing with a drunk friend that he's had one too many to be driving. They, like the glockies, always say they are "just fine!" . :boxing

All in fun.... :cheers2:
