This gun is on sale for $289 at Academy. Is this a good deal. Are these guns pretty good & reliable? Just wondering that seems like a really good price.

The Sigma is a reliable pistol just not real popular. They were S&W's first foray into polymer framed handguns and they copied Glock just a tad too closely and were sued and lost. The biggest complaint in the past was the heavy, gritty, trigger. I'm told they have the problems worked out and they are pretty darn good guns now.

Of the S&W polymer guns the M&P is the Cadillac the Sigma is the Chevy. If you think you'd like to buy one the price is good. Also, APEX TACTICAL offers a spring kit to improve the trigger on the Sigma.

eta: Oops my bad! That is the SD that is the Chevy Impala it's a combination of the Sigma and the M&P dang good gun and Apex makes a trigger improvement kit for it too.

Thanks MoJo: Im planing on getting a new gun around X-Mas time. So far Im wanting the M&P9 or M&P45. leaning closer to the 9mm. Im not really sure about the .40 I due to the sharp recoil for coming back on the target. I think I'll skip on this SD40VE.

I do not have the Sigma 40, but did have the Sigma 9
As said above, very reliable, just not popular

But for the .40 ammo itself,
I have the M&P9, 40 and 45, all full sized, and really do not see much of a difference with the M&P between the 9 and 40.
The only physical benefit is you can get 17 rounds in the M&P9 mag and 15 in the 40.
And of course cost difference for ammo, the 9's are a bit less expensive.

I own both the Sigma SW40VE and the SD40VE. Both very dependable and trouble free - eat any ammo fed. Bit heavy on the trigger (12+ Lb. on Sigma; 8+ Lb. on SD). Both make great HD / bedside weapon or knock-around in the outback. Fun guns on the range. The SD has a standard Picatinny rail. Also, the magazines are interchangeable between the two (just the mag floor plate is different - doesn't affect operation). Great price at Academy. If I didn't already own, would buy.

As an after thought: Also own the Sigma SW9VE and SD9VE.

Im starting to agree with you Teamless. I also think the 9mm is a good caliber expecially with the Hornady CD ammo. I really like my Glock 17 gen 4 for carry.
I also love my Ruger P95. I think Ill just wait and get the M&P 9MM. 0r .45 I have all 9mm's right now. or maybe a Springfield XD ???

I went to Academy & checked out the M&P9. It is perfect fit. Perfect for carry. Ive been reading about the M&P line & nothing but good stuff.
I line the M&P line as much as the glock. even though I havent fired it!

Take an M&P put an Apex duty-carry trigger kit in it and you have one very sweet shooting gun. I have never been recoil sensitive and find the 40 S&W to be very manageable especially compared to a .357 Magnum.

I think Im going to hold off for the Smith & SWesson S&P .40 full duty size.

If im not mistaking I think the price of the M&P .40 is the same as the 9mm. At Academy. The 45 is more but I dont think Academy has it. Thanks everybody!!!

I really like the M&P line, but I prefer the XD line. And you are the first person I've heard say the stock M&P trigger is nicer than the XD line. Most of my buddies have immediately swapped out the stock M&P trigger for an APEX or other after-market trigger (except on the Shield).

All said, I would feel good about any of the guns discussed, the XD line, the M&P line, even the Sigma line. If you have the opportunity, go rent some of them at a range and try them out. That is the best way to find out what you like.

I have shot a friends Sigma for a couple hundred rounds just because I was curious. To a gun enthusiast, the Sigma is going to fall short to a number of competitors, but to someone who is not too particular and just wants an affordable, reliable gun, the Sigma seems to fill that niche. The one I shot was very reliable, easy to use, accurate. I think it would be a good truck gun. A good enough gun to get the job done if you need it, but not expensive or fancy enough to break your heart if it were stolen or damaged.
