In Cleveland, Ohio, today, Ariel Castro, 53, pled guilty to 937 counts, including rape and kidnapping. Under the deal, he will spend life in prison without parole and receive 1,000 additional years. He also forfeited all his property.

He kidnapped three women, held them prisoner, and raped them for 9 to 11 years. He impregnated at least two. He had been eligible for the death penalty because he impregnated one of his victims and then beat her so that the fetus died.

The prosecutor remarked. "He's never coming out [of prison] except nailed in a box or in an ash can."

The plea bargain spared his victims the ordeal of a lengthy trial and the associated media circus.

This is the longest sentence I ever heard of. A few years ago a court in Alabama (IIRC) sentence someone to 800 or so years.

Drawing, quartering, and roasting on a spit were not sentencing options—unfortunately. However, he probably will not be the most-liked man in prison.

I know that this is terrible but I would like to see him rooming with a 6 foot, 300lb guy who believes that Mr. Castro is his personal property for the next 25 years. I think they would call that poetic justice.

The guy is so ugly, I find it hard to imagine any kind of interest.

He will undoubtedly be found mistreated...and deserves understanding...and gosh, he's always been misunderstood and should be treated with the understanding he rightly deserves cuz you know, it aint his fault...maybe someday he'll get a medal...

You know, if you find yourself thinking someone deserves to be raped in prison, you might as well just execute them.

I think they really pushed for this plea so that the girls wouldn't have to go through the horror of a trial. the only way to execute him would be a trial. plus to execute him would be more expensive than letting the general pop do it....I'm betting he doesn't survive 2 years.

Life without parole plus 1000 years must be a record.

It'll be interesting to see how long he survives in prison.

Either one works for me, but, "Let the punishment fit the crime", has a certain appeal to it. What's that word??? Oh yea -- Justice!

Justice involves making the victims whole. Justice is not possible in a case like this—only retribution. Retribution will have to do.

I think the guy will probably be found face-down cooling toward room temperature in the shower in less time than it would have taken to get a legal execution.

Why should taxpayers have to foot the bill to keep this waste of oxygen alive? His is the kind of depraved criminality that deserves the death penalty, even if no one is murdered.

A defendant cannot plead to get the death penalty (though some have tried). They must have a jury trial and sentencing hearing.

I was attempting generalize the circumstances to say that someone committing the same acts but without the murder has still committed acts in totality that merit the death penalty.

I personally think that forcible rape and child abuse merit being hogtied and fed to starving dogs, but the U.S. Supreme Court disagrees. They made the death penalty for anything but capital murder out-of-bounds a long time ago (don't ask me to cite the case).
