SWAT kills gunman holding hostages after negotiations break down. Gunman kills six before police arrive.

Yup was just reading another article on that.. Good job by the SWAT team storming the building to rescue the last 2 hostages. You would have hoped that there would have been a least 1 citizen armed in the building

A crisis team was able to briefly establish communication with the man. Rodriguez said negotiators and a SWAT team tried talking with him from the other side of the door of an apartment unit where he was holding two hostages.

But Rodriguez said the talks eventually "just fell apart." Officers stormed the building, fatally shooting the gunman in an exchange of gunfire.

"They made the decision to go in there and save and rescue the hostages," Rodriguez said. Both hostages survived. Rodriguez said he didn't have any information on how long negotiations lasted.

There probably was more than one and they acted to protect themselves and their family. Not only from the immediate risk but also from the long term risks. I know a lot of people who aren't going to get involved in their neighbors problems in the post Zimmerman era. It's not worth it these days, especially in Florida.

That family is refusing to speak to media because, drum roll..., they don't want to get involved. Nobody wants to help anybody else. Nobody wants to get involved. Nobody stops to thank the guy/gal who saved their bacon. Evil only exists because good people don't do anything about it.

Only 2% of people have CHLs so it is highly unprobable that there would've been armed resistance to the perps.

Last time I saw the numbers it was over 3% in Dade County, but whatever the stats, people don't need a CHL to have a gun in their apartment in Florida.

Yeah the Zimmerman trial really encouraged citizens to get involved in the safety of other people outside their homes.

The situation may be different. The perception is not.

After George Zimmerman was turned into a lily-white, hitler-quoting, racist, unstable, cop wannabe, for the simple crime of defending his life, the message has gotten out loud and clear. There is no more Kitty Genovese. She doesn't exist, never did and never will, and you didn't want to know anyway. Look straight ahead, don't dare flick your eyes to either side, except to look for an escape route. Don't you even dare think about defending yourself or someone else, or we will kill you in court and destroy your family and reputation in the media.

At least, that's an attitude the media and the race-baiters are deliberately fostering, even if that's not their stated intent. I believe this is an attitude that will fail to catch hold as strongly as they want, and it will fall back into disfavor, but at the moment, folks are running scared. Nobody wants to be Zimmerman'd.
