“There was no point to kill him. There could have been a warning shot. There could have been another way of protecting," Aldair Ortega, friend of Rios, said.
Really, a "warning shot"? :banghead: Where do they find these people.
“His life shouldn’t have been taken for a stupid iPhone case. Let the kid run,” Dolores Gutierrez said. “His mother would’ve been more than happy to pay Walmart back for a case.”
She got part of this right, his life shouldn't have been take for an Iphone case, he should have paid for the item rather than steel it, run away from police and then get into a physical altercation with police. Yes this was 100% preventable by this dead young man, responsibility rest solely on him.

What kind of nut gets into an altercation with police over a stolen iPhone case?

First paragraph says it all:
A 19-year-old shoplifting suspect in Conroe was shot and killed by an off-duty sergeant who said the teen choked him to the point of nearly passing out, police said.

yeah the kid never mentioned anything about him choking a police officer to the point of blacking out.... that and the main fact that these kids aren't getting is that YOUR FRIEND WAS BREAKING THE LAW! so he deserved to be chased down and arrested....the minute you go from running ( you're already resisting) to altercation/assault you enter a whole new ballgame of consequences. these punks think that stealing is okay and they oughta start losing body parts everytime you get caught stealing. There are only a couple things worse in this world that are worse than a theives...... one less criminal to worry about and not a wink lost......

Sure reminds me of a similar situation in Florida.

Any bets on how long it takes the Sharpton/Jackson cabal to trot out the race card? No? I wonder why they wouldn't campaign for this poor innocent kid just walking home from shopping too?

He's not black. For Sharpton and Jackson, nothing else matters.

This guy placed the value of his life at about 30 dollars. That may be too high. We should all overlook criminal acts and let chaos rein...

I'll have to remember the "warning shot" idea if I'm ever being choked to death  Or just make sure I never shoot anyone who isn't a white person over the age of nineTEEN.

But in all seriousness, he was working at a bank and was going to go to college :smilelol5:

What a waste. Over a phone case? What the hell is wrong with people today?

I want the cool shiny thing...
I can't pay for it...
Or don't want to...
I think I can get away with it...
I'm going to steal it...
Oops got caught stealing...
Gotta run, cuz that's better than paying penance for the crime I just committed...
Aw man the cop can run farther & longer than I can...
Better attack the cop so I can get away...
Bang
Uh oh. I want my mom.

So many things wrong with this whole episode, and they're all pinned on the perp who is a MAN not a kid.

Why is the reporter saying a shoplifter was killed, when in fact it was clearly assault on a police officer that was the cause? The reporter WANTS to paint a particular story, or his editor does. Either way it is pure manipulation.

:iagree:
This would be just like saying that "5mph over limit Speeder killed by cop" if a cop tried to pull over a speeder, speeder ran, was caught, resisted arrest, assaulted the cop and was shot by the cop. The speeding, or in the real story....shoplifting, was only the first illegal act that the perp committed that started a series of more wrong/illegal choices he made, which led to his death. When are people going to learn, assaulting someone who has a gun is a bad idea. :headscratch

How does this sound similar? The kid in Florida did not steal from anyone and try to fight the person trying to stop him from getting away with something. He was pursued walking home doing nothing, totally different situation.

Just to point out something, although I'm aware I'm preaching to the choir.

When the kid ran from the cop, that was "active resistance."

When he turned to fight, that became "assaultive behavior."

When his hands went to the officer's neck, that was "deadly force."

Deadly force is matched and responded to with deadly force.

No tears for Jonny Felon-in-Training here.

"rlol"
Thanks, I needed a good laugh this morning. He wasn't "doing nothing". He was high on dope casing houses looking for cash, or something he could turn into cash, to buy more dope. Have you followed this case at all?
TM wasn't "pursued". Did you listen to the 911 call? Z briefly walked away from his truck in order to maintain visual contact. When told by 911 that he didn't need to do that, it's obvious by the background noise on the phone that Z stops and returns to his truck (we know this because we hear him open the truck door).
Everything that happens after that rest solely on the shoulders of TM. He became the pursuer and attacked Z because he knew Z had busted him casing the hood.
How does this sound similar? Two no good punk thugs decided to assault someone with a gun and paid the ultimate price for their stupidity, that's how. Society is better off without either of them.

But, wait, isn't that racism??? Surely someone who accuses others of that heinous crime would not practice it themselves? :evil2:

The article says they called the police and then briefed the off duty sgt... this is not clear and makes me question whether he was off duty as in not working, or working off duty in a security capacity at Walmart? It is normal for some Walmarts to have off duty officers in various locations that are high in crime. If he was working then fine, however IF the Sgt was really just off duty, I go back to my belief that it is better to be a good witness. There is no obligation to intervene on a shoplifter. Walmarts are full of shop lifters. Just go buy your groceries and go home. Leave the police work to their loss prevention and on duty officers. This ended bad and he could have lost his life while being choked... all for a shop lifter while off duty :smash: ?

Side note last year in Austin an on duty APD officer was shot and killed in a walmart by a shop lifter. They can be dangerous.
