My letter to the Austin-American Statesman

Following my own advice, I submitted the following as a 'Letter to the Editor'. I doubt it will be printed, but I gave it a try.
The first day had not even passed following the Virgina Tech tragedies before the gun control crowd had stepped in with their tired old arguements. Their logic seems to be that if something does not work, try more of it.
Their gun control schemes have only served to create defensless victim zones which ensure that only the criminals will have firearms there. By definition, law abiding citizens will continue to obey the laws, however misguided, and the criminals will continue to violate them.
Think about where these mass killings have occured: universities, schools, day care centers, post offices (going postal?), and commercial aircraft. The criminals know of these places and select them because they know that no one will be there to stop their heinous deeds.
If you think that availability of firearms is the problem, try to recall any mass murders at shooting ranges. You can't. If you think gun control is the solution, then Washington, D. C. must be a violence free zone. It isn't.
Tragedies will happen. Pehaps, if licensed, law abiding citizens were permitted the means to defend themselves (and others), the death toll at these horrible events would be less.
If I had known, I could have added Johnson Space Center to the list. Let's pray someone hears our message and is convinced enought to make the changes.
